The History of the Washington Hospital School of Nursing dates back to 1900 when the first class of three students was graduated.
There were four lectures given each month for six months, the entire extent of the theoretical program at that time.  Practical experience in caring for the patient highlighted the course.

By 1910, the classes had increased to six in number and a total of 39 nurses had graduated from the school in ten years.  In 1920, there was a small graduating class of three students, but the  number of alumnae had increased to 82.

When the two hospitals merged, these two alumnae groups became the older members of the Washington Hospital Alumnae Association.
The school grew in number of students from 1920.
Average cost of three years of schooling in the 1940's was around $300.00 that included room, board, health care and laundry services.
Including the Class of 1952 graduating class, a total of 616 students had received their diplomas from Washington Hospital School of Nursing.

1968 saw the admittance of male students, Alumnae soon became Alumni. The three year program changed to two years and then later to two and one-half years.
Students also no longer live in the Nurses Residence. It is now used for class work and office space for Human Services Dept. and Medical Records and other offices.

December 2000 marked the 101st graduating class and at that time there were 3,563
graduates. Cost of entire program now costs around $16.000.00 and includes 34 credits form Waynesburg Hospital in Waynesburg, PA. Students begin basic courses at Waybnesburg College but as program continues all class work is taught at the Washington Hospital location. To read more about the Nursing School today    GO TO
