Charles R. "CR" SMITH
--
Obituary
--
Saturday 28 October 2000 Santa Cruz Sentinel
--
SANTA CRUZ -- Charles R. "CR" Smith, a former high school principal who headed the local high school athletic league, died Oct. 15 in Santa Cruz. He was 86.
Smith was a tireless supporter of local athletics, coaching and refereeing his students and sons for many years. He was also the first principal of Loma Prieta High School and held that position from 1967 to 1978. (Note: Loma
Prieta is the Santa Cruz School District's alternative high school.)
The successful teaching method he helped establish for alternative schools is still in use, said Dennis McGinley, a teacher and coach at LPHS.
"He had a lot of compassion for at-risk kids and some good, firm ideas on how to encourage them," McGinley said. "And he set limits. He was very successful at what he did, and the kids respected him."
Smith also helped create "phenomenal" attendance rates and supported the start of athletics and field studies at LPHS, his former colleague said.
As commissioner of the local athletic league for nine years, Smith supervised and scheduled sports officials for high school games throughout the league.
Pat Lovell, the current comissioner, worked with Smith in the '70s and '80s.
"He was quite a character. We used to have a lot of fun," Lovell said. "He knew sports very well."
Smith gew up in Salinas and graduated from UC-Berkeley in 1938. He played high school and college basketball and baseball and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, training aviators in survivor skills. After the war he
was a lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserve.
He came to Santa Cruz in 1948 and worked at Santa Cruz High School for the next 11 years, teaching business and driver's education courses and coaching basketball, baseball and golf.
He encouraged sports for girls and hooked his students up with jobs in local businesses, practices that were innovative at the time.
Smith also worked as vice principal at Branciforte Junior High School and as child welfare and attendance officer for the city school district.
He retired from Loma Prieta, the county's first alternative high school, in 1978. His hobbies included golf, bridge, travel and spending time with his family.
He was also a master storyteller in his prime, said his son, Steven Smith, though it is no tall tale that he had two holes-in-one at Pasatiempo, where he golfed for many years.
His sons attended UC-Berkeley on full basketball scholarships.
He is survived by sons James Smith of Millbrae and Steven Smith of Corralitos, sister Elizabeth Resetar of Watsonville, and two granddaughters.
Private services will be held followed by the scattering of his ashes at sea. Donations are preferred to the Salvation Army or to a charity of the donor's choice.
