High School Librarian Ruth Bradley Dies
--
Ruth E. Bradley, 58, Santa Cruz high school librarian since 1937, died yesterday in a local hospital.
She was taken ill suddenly Friday, after school was out.
"All of us were shocked by her sudden death," School Superintendent Homer H. Cornick said today. "She will be missed very much by the students, by her fellow teachers, and by everyone who knew her."
"The teachers and students all held her in highest respect and affection because of her warm personal qualities, as well as her outstanding abilities," Cornick added, lauding her "remarkable sympathy and understanding of the
youngsters."
Miss Bradley, who lived with Helen L. Calkins at 516 California street, came to Santa Cruz in 1931, after earning her credential as a school librarian at the University of California. She taught Latin, as well as library
courses, when she first joined the Santa Cruz school system, at Mission Hill in 1931. She remained in charge of the Mission Hill school library until her transfer to the high school.
Born in Sedalia, Missouri, Miss Bradley moved to Colorado during her childhood. She was graduated from Colorado Springs high school before earning her teaching degree at Colorado college.
She taught English and Latin in Colorado high schools for 13 years before coming to the west coast to attend UC.
Miss Bradley was a member of the Calvary Episcopal church and the American Association of University Women.
She is survived by three brothers, Robert of Denver, Bruce of St. Elmo, Illinois; Richard or Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Downey of Washington, D.C.
Memorial services will be conducted by Rev. Norman H. Snow at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Calvary Episcopal church.
Private cremation will follow in the IOOF crematory.
Friends may call at the Wessendorf chapel until 1 p.m. tomorrow.
