Wilma Pfafflin LAURENCE
--
Remembrance
--
Sunday 8 March 2009 Santa Cruz Sentinel, p. A15
--
Wilma Pfafflin Laurence died peacefully, with her family March 3, 2009. She was born a second generation Californian and only child of William and Myrtle Pfafflin on July 6, 1921. She was preceded in death by her husband, U. E. "Larry" Laurence, of Santa Cruz.
Wilma is survived by her son Marvin Kent Laurence of San Jose and his children David, of Mesa, Arizona, and Alexis, currently attending IIT in Chicago; and daughter, Marsha Laurence Roberts, her husband, Charles Sherman Roberts, of Carmichael, California, their daughter Morgan, currently in Tubingen, Germany while attending San Diego State University, and sons Andrew and Austin, attending the Sacramento Waldorf School.
Wilma graduated from Sequoia High School, Redwood City, in 1939, earned a bachelors degree with a major in Music from San Jose State University and completed graduate work at Stanford University. She was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon, a national music fraternity. She was married to her husband Larry for 49 years, who began teaching in the business department at Santa Cruz High School in 1948 where he headed the department for many years until his retirement. Larry died in 1992.
Wilma moved to Carmichael in May of 2004 to be closer to her daughter's family. Wilma and her husband, Larry, were devoted parents and grandparents. They generously supported their children and grandchildren in pursuit of education and personal development. She enjoyed traveling to Europe, Asia, and Australia with her husband and family. Wilma studied violin privately with two former concertmasters of the San Francisco Symphony, Naoum Blinder and Frank Hauser. She taught music at Notre Dame College in Belmont, California, and later at Bethany College in Scotts Valley. She taught violin and piano privately for many years. She was a charter member of the Santa Cruz Symphony and played first violin for over 30 years. Wilma played Jack Benny's violin while he was a guest soloist with the Santa Cruz Symphony during intermission, a highlight of her life. She continued her passion for the arts as an active philanthropist in the Sacramento area supporting the Sacramento Philharmonic, Mondavi Center, and the Sacramento Opera.
Private burial services will be held in Santa Cruz. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial reception at her daughter's home Saturday, August 8, 2009, in Carmichael, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Wilma's name to the Santa Cruz Symphony, Sacramento Opera Association, or the Sacramento Waldorf School.
