A Mass of Christian burial will be on Wednesday for Helen McAllister, who died Thursday after a brief illness. She was 88.
Born in San Francisco, Mrs. McAllister moved to Santa Cruz when she was 6 years old. Whe was the daughter of a pioneer family, and her mother was Nora Foerster.
Mrs. McAllister graduated from Santa Cruz High School and also from San Jose State University.
She was a school teacher in Santa Cruz Unified School District for more than 25 years. She taught at Gault and Branciforte schools and later became supervisor of the arts program for the County Office of Education.
Mrs. McAllister was a member of Delta Phi Upsilon and Alpha Kappa Kapa Gamma sorieties. She was also a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She was an accomplished traveler and loved gardening.
She is survived by three cousins, Richard Foerster, Pat Mosley, and Jeanette Williams, all of Santa Cruz.
Mass will be on Wednesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. beginning at Our Laday Star of the Sea Church, 515 Frederick St., Santa Cruz.
She will be buried at Holy Cross Mausoleum, next to her husband, George W. McAllister, who died in 1979.
In lieu of flowers, rembrances may be made to Star Outreach, 515 Frederick St., Santa Cruz, 95062.
