Alpheus GREEN
--
Stories
--
In the spring of 1966 I did my student teaching at Santa Cruz High School in Alpheus Green's third period algebra class just before the lunch break. Mr. Green had some standardized tests that he kept locked in a drawer within
the large table at the front of the room. Though he didn't say so, his actions clearly indicated that I should guard those tests with my life.
One day after using the tests during the class I was helping a student during the lunch break. The tests were on top of the front table. Toward the end of lunch some students from the 4th period class wandered in, and, while I
was helping the 3rd period student, one of them "napped" one of the standardized tests.
Though Mr. Green was somewhat upset at the disappearance of one of the tests, he said he'd take care of it.
Within a day or two he found out "via the grapevine" who had taken the test, confronted him, marched the student to his home and up into his room, retrieved the purloined test, and returned to the school.
I assume the student with "sticky fingers" had to perform much better merely to tread water in Mr Green's 4th period class thereafter.
--
Mr. Green's main words of advice to me were to "start out tough -- you can always ease up later, but you can't do the opposite."
While teaching at Harbor High School from Sep 1968 to Jun 1971 I attended a State Farm barbecue with my parents. The wife of one of the agents complained to my mother that I was too hard on the kids, especially her son.
Mr. Green, mission accomplished!
--
Jim Simpson, who was advisor to the Sophomore Class one year, found that they temporary building they were going to use for a meeting was already occupied. He suggested they use the auditorium.
As they approached the auditorium it became clear that someone was inside playing the piano. Mr. Simpson told the students to enter and take a seat as quietly as possible.
Mr. Green was playing the piano, and he wasn't playing "Chopsticks." Jim described it as "beautiful" even though he is not likely a fan of classical music.
However, the concert ended when one of the students made some noise, for Mr. Green stopped playing, slammed down the keyboard cover, and stalked out.
--
Bob Solderholm, vice principal at SCHS from 1959 to 1962 (when he became principal at the new Soquel High School) also described Mr. Green's playing as "wonderful," though he cautioned that you had to keep quiet while Mr. Green
was playing the piano in the auditorium or he would stop playing and leave.
