[663] Charles Vernon BERLIN
--
During the 1920s and 1930s hundreds of high schools and colleges throughout the country sponsored radio clubs. Santa Cruz High School had a Radio Department, beginning in the late twenties. An active amateur station continued
into the 1950s. Radio technology (electronics) shop was part of the elective curriculum. Many local radio and television technicians were products of these studies. An unknown number of other students pursued engineering careers. During WW2, many of
them served as communicators in the various branches of military service.
Teacher and advisor for the classes was Frank Kazmarek, W6EMZ. One of the star pupils was Vernon Berlin, W6JCZ. In 1930 Vern constructed an amateur station for the local Naval Reserve unit, which was housed in the Veterans
Memorial Building in Santa Cruz. An active station still exists at this location. In 1947 Vern became a founding partner for radio station KSCO. He served as General Manager and Chief Engineer of the station until his retirement in 1986.
A 60-year member of the SCCARC, Vern became a silent key in 1993.

Obituary
--
Sunday 9 May 1993 Santa Cruz Sentinel, p. A-13
--
Services will be Tuesday for Charles Vernon Berlin, one of the founders of radio station KSCO, who died Saturday in Santa Cruz after a ten-year fight against cancer. He was 78.
In 1947 Berlin built radio station KSCO in partnership with Fred D. McPherson Jr. and Dr. Mahlon McPherson. He acted as general manager of KSCO and later KSCO-FM until the stations were sold in 1986. After the sale, he continued
to serve as a consultant to the new owners.
Mr. Berlin was born in Aptos in 1915 and graduated with honors from Santa Cruz High School in 1932.
It was at Santa Cruz High that he became interested in radio. He received his amateur radio operator's license while a high school student and was a member of the Santa Cruz High School Amateur Radio Operators Club. His
interest, and particularly in amateur radio, continued until his death and he was an active member for 60 years in the Santa Cruz County Amateur Radio Operators Club.
He was a member of the Santa Cruz Rotary Club for 45 years, serving as a director from 1951-1952 and as club secretary from 1988-1991. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served as a foreman of the Santa Cruz County grand jury
in 1962 and 1963. He served for several years on the Santa Cruz City Library Board.
He is survived by his wife of 50 yars, Julia Paganelli Berlin of Santa Cruz; his daughter, Karen Jeffries of Santa Cruz; his son Jim Berlin of Salinas; his brother, Lloyd Berlin of Santa Cruz; three grandchildren; and two nieces.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of the Four Seasons, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz. A private interment will be at Oakwood Memorial Park. Contributions to the Santa Cruz Rotary Club Endowment, P.O. Box 497, Santa
Cruz, Calif. 95061, are preferred.
