PLEASURE POINT - An 85-year-old woman was killed Tuesday morning in a house fire on East Cliff Drive that sent flames leaping 15 feet skyward from the seaside home.
The City Coroner's Office withheld the victim's identity until they could complete an autopsy. Neighbors said 85-year old Ruth Warren, a former Soquel High School English teacher, owned the house and lived there alone.
Central fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze, which started about 6:30 a.m. and destroyed the single-story home. The fire took more than 25 minutes to control and black smoke bellowed 50 feet in the air.
"It went like kindling," said neighbor Janis Nestor, who was awakened by a friend call from the Santa Cruz Mountains to inform her of a large funnel of black smoke coming from her neighborhood.
Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Bowles said that type of smoke is not uncommon for older homes. He said the house, which he guessed was more than 60 years old, had wood floors and walls with oil-based stain.
The fire gutted the center of the house, leaving a large stone chimney. The two side wings of the house were left standing but smoke poured through the broken windows and fire burned the interior. Neighbors, looking [on] from
the driveway, could see through the charred remains of the house to the surfers in the water off 20th Avenue.
Central firefighters discovered the body in one of the wings. The room overlooked the water, but coroner's officials said the windows had been boarded up with plywood, leaving the victim no means of escape.
Fire officials have not released a damage estimate. Nestor, who is a real estate agent, estimated the property itself is worth at least $1 million.
