Drennen Jack SYNDER

Cabrillo Founding Dean Jack Snyder Dies at 74
--
Aptos - Jack Snyder, one of Cabrillo College's founding deans, died of cancer at his Aptos home Saturday. He was 74.
Snyder was the first dean of students and later dean of occupational education during his 22-year tenure at the school.
Cabrillo's first president, Bob Swenson, remembers Synder as "a gentle and soft-spoken person with a reputation for integrity and warmth in his relations with students and staff."
"He was greatly admired, especially by thousands of former students whom he counseled and advised in student leadership positions throughout his years at Santa Cruz High School and Cabrillo College," Swenson said.
During an interview with the Sentinel on his retirement in 1981, Snyder recalled how Cabrillo began in 1959.
"It was in temporary quarters in Watsonville. We took an old building that had been condemned and we put in a fire escape and lighting."
These "quarters" were a one-story barracks from the old Freedom Air Base that Snyder managed to buy for $1. The building is still used today as an office by the Pajaro Valley Unified School District.
"We had it cut in half and moved it down the middle of Main Street at 4 a.m. one morning," he recalled.
"It took up the whole street," he said, explaining why they moved it in the middle of the night.
"There were 750 students the first year. Generally, people didn't want to go to the campus because there were no buildings," he said.
Today Cabrillo College's enrollment approaches 13,000 students.
"It was a great adventure. Jack was terrific," recalled Swenson, who was also a close friend of Snyder's.
Snyder was a native of Los Angeles. He earned his bachelor's degree at San Jose College in 1955, and went on to obtain his master's degree at Stanford University. After serving in the army in World War II, he returned to central
California to teach and counsel students at Santa Cruz High School.
In 1958 Snyder served as president of the California Business and Education Association. He was also a member of the Watsonville Rotary Club, the Masons, and the Cruiser Haven Yacht Club in Stockton, where he kept a boat.
His daughter, Lani Adams, remembered one of their boating adventures in San Francisco bay:
"We towed him, water skiing, around Angel Island and out past the Golden Gate," she said.
"He water skied 45 minutes. Afterward he told us he was so bored out there that he started spiting at the sea gulls that were flying around him."
After retiring in 1981, Synder pursued his lifelong interests in boating, scuba diving, travel, and camping.
"He had a lust for life," said Swenson. "At over 60 he went scuba diving in Truk Lagoon in the sunken ships."
Before he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1992, Snyder spent 10 years caring for his wife Jean, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Last year Mrs. Synder was the first patient admitted to The Gardens, a special care
facility on Ocean Street in Santa Cruz that specializes in treatment of Alzheimer's patients.
Snyder is survived by his wife, his daughter, Lani Adams and her husband Dick Adams of San Jose; his daughter, Vicki Wiley of Southern California; and his sister, Marie Beach of El Toro.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Aptos Comunity United Methodist Church, 221 Thunderbird Dr. A reception will follow the service.
Contributions are preferred to The Gardens Resident Care Home, Re: JS, 1410 Ocean St., Santa Cruz, 95060.
