Dr. Allen Pederson, 71, Died on Sunday
--
Memorial services for Dr. Allen J. Pederson, longtime Santa Cruz physician beloved for his work with youth, will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Normans Family Chapel, 3620 Soquel Drive, with the Rev. B.F. Janes officiating.
A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Pederson died Sunday at his home at age 71.
Pederson came to Santa Cruz in 1938 following graduation from the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University medical school. He became associated with Dr. Mahlon McPherson and Dr. Jay M. Gates in offices at Vine and
Church streets, and he remained associated with McPherson until both retired.
However, Pederson enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant in 1942 as a medical officer and shipped out with the U.S. Marines in 1943 to spend 13 months in grueling action in South Pacific campaigns, including the initial
landings at Okinawa, Leyte, Luzon and Guam. He rose to the ran of Lt. Commander.
Following return to Santa Cruz, Pederson was for many years the physician for the Santa Cruz High School football team and sponsored a scholarship program. He also hosted annual dinners for the football coaches, and was rated as
a great football fan "even if he was slightly prejudiced about the Big Ten." His interest in athletics was indicated at Wisconsin University, where he captained the swimming team in 1926.
Pederson was a past president of the Santa Cruz Junior Chamber of Commerce, headed a swimming team program for the Red Cross and held membership in the Santa Cruz Duck Club, the Kiwanis and Pogonip.
He and his wife, Edna, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 1974.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Robert Pederson of Spokane, Wash. and Thomas Pederson of San Diego; a daughter, Marcia Tonkinson of Laguna Nigel; a brother, Arthur Pederson of Milwaukee, Wis.; a sister, Gladys Saxe of
Stanford, Conn.; and five grandchildren. Contributions to Dominican Santa Cruz, Community Hospital or a favorite charity are preferred.
Cremation will follow services at the IOOF Crematory.
