Alva Miller-Pingel died Feb. 25, 2001, of natural causes. She was 89 years old.
Mrs. Pingel was a Los Gatos native, born March 15, 1911. From 1937 through 1971 she was a school teacher and counselor for numerous Santa Cruz schools.
She was a long-time member of many groups, including the National Education Association, the California Teachers Association, the California Retired Teachers Association, the California Association of Women Administrators and
Counselors, Soroptimist International, Isabella Rebekah Lodge 17, the American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma-Theta Branch, and the American Field Service.
She was also a member of the Santa Cruz High and Soquel High Alumni Associations and the Soquel High P.G.A. and was a Golden Graduate of San Jose State University.
Mrs. Pingel was a world traveler many times over, even during her active senior years. She loved to travel with her friends. She especially enjoyed traveling to Egypt and the Holy Land for its rich history.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Pingel, and her brother, Isador Miller Jr. She is survived by brother Warren B. Miller of Chico, nephews Bill Miller of San Ramon and Wayne Miller of Grass Valley and niece
Sharon Powlison of Hawaii.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel. The service will be Wednesday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel. Burial will be private.
For those desiring, memorial contributions are preferred to your favorite charity.

Services are Wednesday [June 7, 2001] for Alva P. Pingel, who died Sunday at Santa Cruz Health Center. She was 89.
Mrs. Pingel was born and gew up in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Los Gatos.
She worked as a counselor and teacher for numerous Santa Cruz schools from 1937 to 1971.
Mrs. Pingel was a life member of the state and national Education Association, the California Association of Women Administrators and Counselors, Golden Graduates of San Jose State University, Santa Cruz and Soquel high school
alumni associations and Soquel High P.G.A. She was a charter and life member of Soroptimist International of Mid-Santa Cruz County and a 50-year member of Isabella Rebekah Lodge No. 17 in Santa Cruz.
She was also a member of the California Retired Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma's Theta Branch and American Field Services.
She was named Old Lady of the Year at a 1995 Santa Cruz Old Timers Association luncheon for 40 years of teaching and more than 60 years in Santa Cruz.
She was also featured in a 1994 Name Dropping column for her travels to all 50 states and viewing six of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. At that time, the retired world history teacher was planning a trip to Costa Rica
after winning a travel agency contest.
Mrs. Pingel travled the world many times, even during her senior years, and especially loved traveling to Egypt and the Holy Land.
She is survived by a brother, Warren B. Miller of Chico; two nephews and a niece. Her husband, William Pingel, and a brother, Isador W. Miller, [preceded her in death.]
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be private.
Contributions are preferred to a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are by Santa Cruz Memorial Park.
