Wilbur C. Metcalf, 76, a native of Lincoln, Neb., and a resident of Santa Cruz since 1948, died suddenly yesterday afternoon in his home at 243 Trevethan Ave. He attended schools in Lincoln and worked on the railroad before
joining the Lincoln fire department in 1920. He became a Captain before his retirement in 1941. He settled in California and was a security officer for the Encinal terminal at the Alameda shipyards during World War II. He purchased and operated the
Shuffle inn on Soquel avenue until he retired in 1956.
He is survived by his widow, Maryetta Metcalf of Santa Cruz; three sons, Earl C. Metcalf, Al Metcalf, and Donald L. Metcalf, all of Santa Cruz; a daughter, Genevieve Beck of Newport Beach; two brothers, Harry and Paul, both of
Lincoln; 8 grandchrildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Brotherhood of Firemen of Lincoln.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in White's Chapel with Rev Clark Sloneker of the First Christian Church officiating. Interment will follow in the IOOF cemetery.
