Emmett Thompson passed away Sunday evening September 24, 2006. He was born to parents Lee and Edna Thompson in San Martin, CA on August 3, 1925, one of seven children.
Emmett attended Laurel Elementary School and Mission Hill Junior High, and graduated from Santa Cruz High School, Class of 1943. He entered the Navy in December of 1942 leaving USNAS, San Diego to serve in the Asiatic Pacific-American area, and returned to Santa Cruz in the spring of 1946.
He was married to the former Jessie McKinney in August of 1947 and enrolled at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, for the fall semester. Emmett majored in Physical Education and played forward on Cal Poly's Varsity Basketball team. He was the first Cal Poly student to do his student teaching outside of SLO County. His internship took place at Santa Cruz High School under the tutelage of Roger Baer, his greatly respected mentor.
During the 1950s era he played City League basketball at a time when the Civic Auditorium was a "place to go" on weekend nights, and at the time when TV was in its infancy.
He received his first teaching position at Santa Cruz High School, teaching remedial math and science and physical education and coaching lightweight football. Emmett eventually became a full-time P.E. teacher and coached varsity basketball. His team won the C.C.A.L. championship in 1959. He established what is now called the Dad's Club Tournament.
Emmett earned his Secondary Credential, B.S. and M.A. in Education from Cal Poly and his Administrative Credential from San Jose State College. He was Vice Principal [under] Delmar Miller at Mission Hill Junior High and moved to Soquel High School as Vice Principal/Dean of Students [in 1962, where he remained] for 16 years. He was transferred to Santa Cruz High for two years as Dean of Students and retired in 1980.
Emmett bought a cattle ranch in Lakeport, CA where he raised registered polled shorthorn cattle. His love of cattle began in 1955 when he bought three head of cattle on property where he built his first home on Western Drive. Emmett rode with the Clear Lake Horsemen's group, often in the Mendocino National forest. He also rode his sure-footed mule in the remote Trinity Alps area. He was a popular President of the Horsemen's Ass'n.
He and his wife returned to the Santa Cruz area in 2002 when his battle with Alzheimer's disease became more apparent.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jessie, his son Bill of Scotts Valley, his daughter Susan Mello of Freedom, and his son, Stephen of Solon, Iowa. He also leaves behind grandchildren Kristin Bish, Jacob Thompson, Mistie Wilson, John Mello and Spencer and Hunter Thompson, and three great-grandchildren.
