Anthony "Tony" FOSTER
--
Obituary
--
Tuesday 7 Mar 1995 Santa Cruz Sentinel, p. A-12
--
Anthony "Tony" Foster, a former language teacher at Santa Cruz schools, died February 19 of a heart attack in Sequim, Wash. He was 77.
He was born Anthony Fiardigotti in Worcester, Mass. He changed his name legally to Foster when teaching elementary school because, he used to say, the children couldn't pronounce his Italian name.
He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He then completed college at [the] University of Denver.
He moved with his wife in 1952 to Santa Cruz, where he taught for 23 years. He taught at Gault Elementary School, Branciforte Junior High School, Harbor High School, and Santa Cruz High School, where he was the varsity golf
coach for many years. He taught English, Spanish, French, and Latin.
He was the original vice president of DeLaveaga Golf Course when it opened in May 1970. He served as a member of the board of directors for many years.
Mr. Foster also loved the outdoors, especially camping and backpacking. He was an ardent traveler, who led many student excursions to Europe. In 1960 he traveled through Western Europe by bicycle for three months.
He retired from teaching in 1975 and moved to Sequim in 1983.
In recent years he accompanied a group of doctors and dentists of the Honduras Medical Mission to remote villages where he acted as a translator. He was a member of the Dungeness Community Church in Sequim.
Mr. Foster is survived by his wife, Ruth Foster of Sequim; a son, David Foster of Visalia; a daughter, Cheryl Meier of Niantic, Conn.; two sisters, Violet Goebel of San Francisco and Hope Sargent of Scarborough, Maine; and three
grandchildren.
A memorial service has taken place. Letters of condolences can be sent to Ruth Foster, in care of Dungeness Community Church, Sequim WA 98382.
