Local Physician Case "Extremely Grave," Says Dean J. Dillehunt
--
Injuries received when the car in which he was riding skidded and rolled over an Oregon highway embankment, pinning him beneath the car, last night gravely endangered the life of Dr. William E. Fehliman, prominent Santa Cruz
surgeon.
It was learned from Dean J. Dillehunt of the University of Oregon Medical School and attending physician, that Dr. Fehliman was suffering from a crushed fourth curvical verterbra and was completely paralyzed. His condition was
pronounced "extremely gave."
Following the accident, which occurred near Hermiston, Oregon, Dr. Fehliman was taken to Immanuel Hospital in Portland, some 350 miles distant, the United Press reported.
With Dr. Fehliman and driver of the car was J.G. Morse of 131 Water street, this city. Morse excaped unhurt in the accident.

Returning From Hunt
--
The two men were returning home from a two week elk hunting trip in Montana when the accident overtook them. Morse took Dr. Fehliman to Hermiston and when it was learned emergency equipment was needed, he was taken to the
Portland hospital and placed under the care of the noted Northwest surgeon.
In Santa Cruz Mrs. [Lola] Fehliman had made arrangements to fly to the bedside of her husband in a chartered airplane, but was prevented from leaving here last night when all ships, private and transport, were grounded because
of storm conditions. Conditions changing "she will board the 10:30 a.m. United Air Lines plane for Portland this morning.
Mr. Morse's son, Dr. Arnold Morse of Stockton, left that city late yesterday afternoon to be of any assistance possible in the case, his mother told The Sentinel last night.

Learns Through Sentinel
--
The accident occurred [illegible] yesterday afternoon and the first word of it was received by The Sentinel via United Press teletype, at 5:13 yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Fehliman was informed throught The Sentinel and immediately
made preparations to fly to her husband's bedside, those plans later being cancelled.
When the trip is made this morning, Earl Fehliman, brother of the injured surgeon, Mrs. Fehliman and Mrs. Morse will probably be aboard, it was said by close friends of the family last night.

Hope for Fehliman Is Small

Neck Broken But Conscious, Late Report; Wife Has Travel Difficulties
--
Small hope was held last night for the life of Dr. William E. Fehliman, prominent Santa Cruz surgeon who was gravely injured in an automobile accident near Hermiston, Oregon, Thursday afternoon, United Press advices to The
Sentinel stated.
Dr. Fehliman is under the care of the ablest surgeon in the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Richard Dillehunt, dean of the University of Oregon Medical School, in the Emmanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
The local surgeon is suffering from a broken neck and serious spinal cord injuries, but was fully conscious and rational last night, according to the report. Dr. Dillehunt ewas quoted as saying the condition of Dr. Fehliman was
extremely critical.
In the meantime, bad luck apparently is pursuing Mrs. Fehliman, who is speeding to the bedside of her stricken husband. Thursday night she had arrangements to charter a private airplane and was about to leave when she was
informed that all planes bound for the Northwest had been grounded because of the stormy conditions.
However she left San Francisco's Mills Field on a United Air liner yesterday morning, only to be grounded in Medford, Oregon, at an emergency landing field when the storm became too severe for the big transport plane to chance
making it through. Mrs. Fehliman and her party boarded a bus at Medford and were expected in Portland late last night.
Dr. Fehliman received the injuries which may prove fatal Thursday afternoon, when a car driven by J.G. Morse of 131 Water street, skidded and went over an embankment on the Umatilla-Wallula cutoff near Hermiston, Oregon. A
blowout caused the skid, investigators said.

Pinned Underneath Car
--
The surgeon was pinned under the car and when removed was taken to Hermiston. When surgeons there realized the extent of the injuries, a call was sent to Portland for additional emergency equipment and later it was decided to
place him on a train and send him to Portland, 350 miles distant.
It was after his arrival in Portland some hours later that the full extent of the injuries was realized, Dean Dillehunt said late Thursday night.
Dr Fehliman is one of the best known and liked surgeion in the local medical fraternity. He has long been associated with Dr. Stanley W. Dowling, with office in the Staffler building on Pacific avenue. He is a great sportsman
and was returning from an elk hunt in Montana when he became involved in the accident.

Loved S.C. Physician Loses In Heroic Six-Day Battle For Life
--
Heroically battling against insurmountable odds for six days, Dr. William E. Fehliman, loved Santa Cruz physician, died in Emmanuel hospital, Portland, Oregon, at 9:20 o'clock this morning.
A broken neck and almost total paralysis sustained in an automobile accident near Hermiston on the Old Oregon Trail highway [Umatilla-Wallalu Cutoff] last Thursday proved more than the courageous spirit and strength of the
former World War captain could withstand.
Although Dr. Richard Dillehunt, noted Portland surgeon despaired of Dr. Fehliman's life since first called in attendance late Thursday night, hundreds of Santa Cruz friends and patients of the cheerful man of medicine refused to
believe to the last that "such a swell little guy could go so soon."
At his bedside when the end came was his devoted wife, who winged northward by plane immediately on receipt of news of the Hermiston accident. Mrs. Fehliman had been in constant attendance at the side of her dying husband since
late Friday night.
--
Smith Telephones
--
First news that life had ended for the loved physician was flashed by telephone to Santa Cruz by Stanford G. Smith, attorney and close friend of the deceased doctor, who with Mrs. Smith had assisted Mrs. Fehliman in her tragic
Portland ordeal since last Sunday.
Every aid know to medical science had been made available in the frantic endeavor to halt a steadily spreading paralysis and bring a turn for the better in Dr. Fehliman's condition.
Twice, during temporary rallies, Dr. Stanley W. Dowling, 18-year associate of Dr. Fehliman in this city, had been notified by telephone to prepare a hurried northern trip to operate--and twice these orders had been countermanded
when relapses came.
The last flurry of hope came late Monday night when Dr. Fehliman, place in an "iron lung" to facilitate his breathing, appeared to improve and grow stronger for several hours. A sudden collapse and relapse to unconsciousness,
however, brought his hasty removal from the respirator early yesterday morning.
--
Rush Graduate
--
Within a short time Dr. Fehliman's fever had mounted to 106 degrees and unconsciousness continued, bringing from Dr. Dillehunt a statement that he feared his patient "might not live to see another morning."
Dr. Fehliman, [58] years of age and a native of Nebraska, came to Santa Cruz in November, 1919, to form a partnership with Dr. Stanley W. Dowling. Prior to moving to Santa Cruz he had practiced for 13 years in Lead, South
Dakota. He was a graduate of Rush Medical College in Chicago.
A captain in the army medical corps during the World War, Dr. Fehliman saw extensive action under fire in the front line trenches in France. Consistently maintaining his interest in veteran's affairs, he had membership in the
Santa Cruz post of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars.
Besides his medical interests in Santa Cruz, Dr. Fehliman was a prime stockholder and director in the Salinas Brewing and Ice company of Salinas.

Pinned Under Car
--
Dr. Fehliman's fatal injuries were sustained when an automobile in which he was riding from a Montana elk hunting trip plunged over an embankment near Hermiston, Oregon, pinning him beneath it. J.G. Morse, 131 Water street, this
city, driver of the car, escaped injury.
The deceased physician is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lola Fehliman, who will accompany the body to Santa Cruz; a brother, C.E. Fehliman, Santa Cruz high school instructor, and mother.
Associated Press advices from Portland late this afternoon reported that Dr. Fehliman's body will be sent to Santa Cruz tonight. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced here tomorrow.
