Services will be Thursday for Roger Y. Baer, who died in Santa Cruz. He was 76.
A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, he had a 30-year career in athletics with the Santa Cruz City School District.
He moved to San Francisco at an early age and began a lifelong interest in athletics when he joined the San Francisco YMCA at age 9. He attended Galileo High School and received a scholarship to College of Pacific in Stockton
from 1933 to 1937 where he was coached by the legendary Amos Alonzo Stagg. He earned All-Far Western Conference and honorable metions All-Coast honors as a senior.
He married his college sweetheart, Mary Bay of Oakland, in 1938 and they moved to Ripon where he coached football at Ripon High School for seven seasons and taught history and biology.
He was head coach at Santa Cruz High School for 8 years and director of physical education and athletics. During his 16 years as a coach, his teams won 13 championships in football, baseball, basketball, and track and field.
He served as athletic coordinator for grades K-12 in the Santa Cruz City Schools District from 1955 to 1972 and retired from the school district in 1975.
After leaving the district he was a part-time athletic insurance and recreation consultant.
He was a member of the family of Saint Joseph, Santa Cruz Elks Lodge number 824, and the Santa Cruz County Retired Teachers [Assn.], serving as president for two terms, and California Retired Teachers Assn.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Baer of Santa Cruz; three sons, Roger T. Baer and Robert Baer, both of Santa Cruz, and Brendon Baer of Scotts Valley; his daughter, Lenore Clark; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Norman's Family Chapel, 3620 Soquel Drive, Soquel. Friends may call at Norman's from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Interment will be in Holy Cross Mauseleum.
Contributions to the Santa Cruz Cardinal Club, 286 Meadow Rd, Santa Cruz, 95606, are preferred.

Former Concert Pianist Anne Hogue Dies At 92
--
Graveside services for Mrs. Anne Christine Hogue, 92, a former concert pianist, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Belmont Memorial Park.
Mrs. Hogue died Sunday. She was a native of Creston, Iowa, and had lived in Fresno 41 years.
She was the widow of Gilbert H. Hogue, a Bureau of Reclamation engineer, who died in 1952.
Mrs. Hogue was a former concert pianist. She also taught piano in private and public schools.
She was graduated from the Augustana Conservatory of Music, Rock Island, Ill, with highest honors in piano, and from the Powers School of Music, where she studied under the noted pianist, Henriette Weber. Mrs. Hogue also studied
music theory for two years at the University of Chicago Conservatory of Music.
Mrs. Hogue was active as a musician with various organizations, including the Parlor Lecture Club.
Survivors include a stepson, Shannon Hogue, Seattle, Wash.
The Lisle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
