The Garden of the Gods. This view is looking south
towards Cheyenne Mountain which can be seen in the distance. |
 |
This was once known as the Peep Hole. This view is
looking west as you can see Pike's Peak in the distance. The Peep Hole
is part of the Siamese Twins rock formation which can be seen below.

 |
The Siamese Twins looking northeast. |
 |
Pike's Peak looking west. I was just south of the
Siamese Twins when I took this view. |
 |
Balance Rock looking northwest. |
 |
The Seven Minute Spring looking east. The Manitou House
Hotel was at this location in the late 1800s and would later burn down.
My wife's ancestor William Iles, worked at the Manitou House in the mid
1870s. |
 |
This location was known as Iles Terrace. James Thurlow
stood at this location in 1872 and took a photo of his home. There was a
another home also in the photo and we believe this was the Iles family
home as Thurlow gave the photo that name. |
 |
Foundation of a structure at Iles Terrace. Was this once
part of the Iles home? The location fits perfectly. Of course 125 years
has seen some shifting of the soil. Family stories say the home burned
down do to a lightening strike. |
 |
Location of the old Thurlow photography studio. The home
is now two stories high, but in the 1870s, Thurlow was the Iles' closest
neighbor. The family even had their portraits taken here. |
 |
Looking back at Iles Terrace from were the Thurlow home
stood. Fountain Creek can be seen in the foreground. |
 |
Another shot of the location of the old Thurlow
photography studio. |
 |
You're now looking southwest, in the center of this
photo would have been the location of the Northeast corner of the Iles
homestead. Highway 24 now zooms overhead, which made it easy to get this
shot. |
 |
The top view of where the Thurlow home once stood. |
 |
A close up shot of were the Iles home was located. You
can see old roads zig zaging everywhere. The old Ute Pass Road can be
seen going across the center of the photo. It was replaced in 1872 by
the New Ute Pass Road. |
 |
Looking southwest again at the mountain peaks. |
 |
Almost looking south. |
 |
Iles Terrace looking northwest. The paved road below
will take you to Highway 24. Rainbow Falls would be at the right edge of
this photo along this road. |
