Silver Plume, Clear Creek County, Colorado - 28th December 2003
In trying to research my wife's Jenkins ancestral
line, I have found that they came to Colorado from Pennsylvania about 1858.
Catherine & David Jenkins brought their family out and the only child that I
know of is William B. Jenkins who would marry Annie Iles of Colorado Springs
in 1881. William's obituary says that he lived in the Pike's Peak region for
59 years when in died in 1917. The only David Jenkins I can find is the well
known David Jenkins of Central City. Although this David would fit perfectly
age wise, all of his children are accounted for and his wife was not
Catherine. I did find a 50 year old Catherine Jenkins living in Silver Plume
on the 1880 census and a William Jenkins living two miles down in
Georgetown. Could Catherine's husband have died? Silver Plume was a huge
mining town at that time, but is now a small little community where the
Georgetown Railroad is stationed. Much more research is needed for this
elusive family.
Pulling off of I-70 at the exit for Silver
Plume, I went two blocks and came upon this sign.
Going left, I found the old school building
which is now a museum.
In the center of town we found this caboose.
Here's the neighborhood near the caboose
Here's downtown Silver Plume, where the dogs
roam free and the kids can leave their bikes parked out on the sidewalk
all winter long in 18 degree weather.
This building was ancient. I think it was
here when my wife's ancestors were here.
