| Notice: This is my work site to help others and myself to compile the records of sometimes difficult proof of Gregory lineage. It is not my intention to speculate on a Gregory progenitor or to use published lineages, but to use primary sources. There may be times when a subject justifies discussion aside from the known. Any corrections or suggestions are welcomed. In that this is a work site, and there will be additions, changes, and corrections, I request that this not be copied, as compiled, for any permanent purpose, or to any web site. - Jo Lee Gregory Spears This page was updated 4/17/09 |
JOHN SMITH (WIFE MARTHA) DIED 1792 MECKLENBURG CO., VA (see his will) Andrew Gregory was connected with the name John Smith as early as 1764 when James Gregory and Andrew Gregory appeared as tithables with John Smith, 400 acres, in St. James Parish, the part of Lunenburg Co., VA that became Mecklenburg Co. in 1765. Andrew Gregory and John Smith lived out their lives near each other in Mecklenburg. Son Daniel Smith and friend Andrew Gregory were appointed executors of the 1792 will of John Smith. John Smith first appeared in Lunenburg County in 1761 when he (styled "of county of Amelia") purchased 400 a. on Middle Fork of Bluestone Cr. (the part that became Mecklenburg) from William Harris. [Lun DB 6:528 Dec 1761/1 Dec 1761] Note: 1765 Mecklenburg County was cut from Lunenburg. In 1765, in a part of Lunenburg that remained Lunenburg, [Lun DB 10:241 10 Oct 1765/same ] John Smith of Mecklenburg purchased 470 acres (part of a larger tract granted to Hampton Wade) in the Juniper Creek area. Smith sold 100 acres of this to Edward Slaughter in 1766 [Lun DB 10:282] and the remaining 370 acres to Andrew Gregory of Mecklenburg in 1767. [Lun DB 11:98] bounded by Stembridge, Sammons, Brown, Robertson, Johnson, Erby [Irby], Slaughter. Signed - John Smith. Wit - Mack Goode Jr, John Stembridge, Joseph Gregory. rec 12 Nov 1767. A memorandum to the deed (same date) was witnessed by Mack Goode Jnr., John Stembridge, John Gregory, Lunenburg Co., Va. (I don't know that Andrew Gregory ever resided on this land in Lunenburg.) In light of all of this, it seems likely that John Smith and wife Martha were the parents of Frances - wife of Andrew Gregory. Some say this John Smith was the John Smith named as exor in will of Robert Tucker [Jr?] died 1768/1769 Amelia Co., VA.: Robert Tucker of Raleigh Parish; wit: James Old, Jesse Coleman, Richard Weeks; Ex.: son William Tucker, son-in-law John Smith. Names: wife Frances Tucker; son Godfrey Tucker; son William Tucker [land adj John Smith]; son Robert Tucker; son Daniel Tucker; dau Martha Smith; dau Frances Crowder; dau Rachel Old. [Amelia Co., VA WB 2X Wills 1761-1771; abstracts by McConnaughey, p.35 (orig. p. 283)] Above Robert Tucker will indicates Tucker's son-in-law John Smith was a landowner in Amelia Co. in 1768. |
