Joseph Gregory Senr first appeared in Mecklenburg Co., VA deed records in March 1772, age about 30. Deeds show he lived most of his adult life in Mecklenburg and adjoining Charlotte and Lunenburg Counties. He was taken to Tennessee in his 90's, where he died in Rutherford Co. about 1842, at age 100+.

JOHN GREGORY	Born 13 Dec 1765 per Lee/Gregory Bible Records; died 19 Sep 1836 Lunenburg Co., VA John Gregory m. Elizabeth Neal, d/o Thomas Neal, 7 Feb 1793. Mecklenburg Co., VA Personal Property Tax lists in the year 1795 shows John Gregory styled "son of Joseph" and taxed 1 free white male above 16 yrs; 4 blacks over 16; 2 horses, mares, colts & mules. Blacks listed were Bob, Dick, Fanny and Grace. John purchased 400 acres adj his father, Joseph Gregory, in Mecklenburg Co., VA in 1795. John began to buy tracts in adj. Lunenburg in 1807. He was styled "of Lunenburg" for the 1st time when he purchased in Lunenburg 6 acres (mill site) in Apr 1816 from Lewis Burwell of Mecklenburg. He continued to enlarge his holdings in Lunenburg. John Gregory left a will in Lunenburg Co., VA naming 9 children: son Thomas N. Gregory (to MO); son Roderick R. Gregory (to MO); son Jackson Gregory (to GA); son David S. Gregory (to MO); dau Nancy Camp wife of Joshua Camp (to Rutherford Co., NC); dau Lucilia Robertson wife of Peter Robertson (to Williamson Co., TN as widow); granddaughter Mary J. T. E. Roberts, dau of John Roberts (Charlotte Co., VA) "who married my daughter Elizabeth Gregory who has now deceased"; son Zachariah Josephus Gregory (remained Lunenburg); dau Susan wife of Doctor M. Keith (to AL); wife Elizabeth Gregory.

BENJAMIN GREGORY	I don't know what happened to this son Benjamin/jgs Early childhood (maybe born) Mecklenburg Co., VA 1787 Personal Property Tax List Mecklenburg Co., VA show "sons" Benjamin and Joseph [Jr] over 15 & under 21 listed with Joseph Gregory. Benjamin was listed in adjoining Charlotte Co., VA 1793, one white tythe, no blacks, one horse. Benjamin was shown on Mecklenburg tax lists 1794, 1795 and 1799. Benjamin was again listed in Charlotte Co 1800. No further record found of Benjamin; no marriage record found. Children, if any, unknown.

JOSEPH GREGORY JR	Died 1816 Charlotte Co., VA 1787 Personal Property Tax List Mecklenburg Co., VA show "sons" Benjamin and Joseph [Jr] over 15 & under 21 listed with Joseph Gregory. Joseph Gregory Jr married 1788, Lunenburg Co., VA to Margaret ("Peggy") Evans. Lived in Charlotte Co., VA. Will dated 2 Feb 1816; recorded 5 Feb. in Charlotte Co., VA. Mecklenburg Co., VA Per. Prop. Tax List 1800 show Joseph Gregory Sr, Joseph Gregory Jr, and John Gregory, along with Gregorys of other families. [Early Settlers Mecklenburg Co., VA, v2, Elliott] Joseph Gregory Jr was living in Charlotte Co., VA by Feb 1805 when he purchased 280 a. from Henry W. Overby on waters of Horsepen Cr. in Charlotte Co. Children: Mary m. Reps J. Elam; Elizabeth m. Young Stokes; John m. Lucretia H. Foster; Nancy m. Field A. Jones; Martha m. Thomas S. Elam; Joel m. Nancy Lester; Ambrose m. Narcissa Ann Cheaney; Jane m. Benj. F. Lester; William m. Mildred F.?; Stephen no record after release of gdn 1835. Some of these children moved to Henderson Co., KY.

WRIGHT GREGORY	Early childhood (maybe born) Mecklenburg Co., VA; died 1816 Davidson Co., TN Mecklenburg Co., VA Land Book 1790-1810 List of Taxable Property within the District of Joseph Banister Clausel Commissioner 1795 p.22 June 23, 3 white males, 4 blacks over 16, 5 horses, mares, colts & mules, Joseph Gregory Senr, Wright & Edward his sons, -16- Pompey, Harry, Rachel, Grace [blacks] ====== 1807 Lunenburg Co., VA DB 21;p 78A I Wright Gregory at present residing in the co of Lunenburg in the state of VA intending shortly to remove to the State of Tennessee have and do by these presents do constitute my Brother John Gregory of the Co of Mecklenburg and State of VA my true and lawful atty for me & in my name to sue for recover & demand & receive all sum or sums of money be due of hereafter become to me & also to dispose of or sell any kind of property which I may possess within the State of Virginia & for me & in my name to all receipts releases discharges etc 21 Feb 1807 Sig Wright (+) Gregory Wit: William Ellis; John Pettus [Note: John Gregory was living in adj. Mecklenburg Co., VA. John styled himself as "of Lunenburg County (where he lived out his life) in a deed dated Apr 1816. In Sep 1813, John still styled himself "of Mecklenburg County." See John Gregory son of Joseph Gregory Senr for evidence this John Gregory was son of Joseph. ========== 1807 Lunenburg Co., VA DB 21:81 21 Feb 1807 between Wright Gregory of Co of Lunenburg & John Gregory of Co of Mecklenburg of the other part/ 80 lbs/ 69 acres in Co of Lunenburg on South Meherrin River, by Eddins Moore, Robert Saunders, John Brown Sig: Wright (x) Gregory; Peggy Gregory Wit: William Ellis, Jno Pettus, H. Marable & John Brown 11 June 1807 Oct Court 1816, Davidson Co., TN, Edward Gregory was appointed administrator of est of Wright Gregory deceased with Godfrey Shelton security, final settlement made 7 Mar 1818 "at the house of Mr. Godfrey Shelton. (Godfrey Shelton was father-in-law of Edward Gregory.) Known children of Wright Gregory: Joseph Elliot Gregory; Wright Gregory Jr; Nancy Gregory. Others?

SARAH GREGORY	Mar. George Haynes in Charlotte Co., VA. Probably the same Geo. Haynes who lived in Williamson Co., TN; and later Gibson Co., TN

Mecklenburg Co., VA Land Book 1790-1810 List of Taxable Property within the District of Joseph Banister Clausel Commissioner 1795 p.22 June 23, 3 white males, 4 blacks over 16, 5 horses, mares, colts & mules, Joseph Gregory Senr, Wright & Edward his sons, -16- Pompey, Harry, Rachel, Grace [blacks] Mar. ca 1807 to Frances Shelton, d/o Godfrey Shelton. Died 1842 Rutherford Co., TN where he left his will. Children: Thomas d. Cole Co., MO; Edwin m. Sarah A. E. Priestly-Hoover; Madison m. Julia Emaline Mason; Henry m. Mary Guynn Mason; Andrew m. 1) Elizabeth A. Lane 2) Temperance Ann Smith 3) Margaret Turley; Jane m. Mr. Anderson; Richard m. Rebecca Jane Martin; America m. Richard B. Davis. Most of these lived Rutherford Co., TN

NANCY GREGORY	Married Austin Duffer, widower, bond 19 Apr 1810; bond names father Joseph Gregory.

MILDRED GREGORY	B. 9 Mar 1780; d. 27 Feb 1844; unmarried [Frank H. Smith, p.99] Sol, son of Thomas Gregory, interviewed by Smith in 1906, referred to the "Black Tongue Disease" that caused so many deaths in the Columbia, TN area, Sol said those in the Gregory family who died of the disease: aunts Mildred Gregory & Polly (Gregory) Brown, brother Samuel, and sister Lucinda. Jill Garrett, Columbia historian, wrote in 1985 that the Thomas Gregory Cemetery in Columbia was destroyed in 1930's. Two of the stones were found in a springhouse in 1978, but the springhouse was gone in 1984. One of the stones had read: "Mildred Gregory, b. 9 March 1780, d. 27 Feb 1844."

MARY "POLLY" GREGORY	[Frank H. Smith, pp. 63, 99] "Died 2 days after her sister Mildred" (1st Mar 1844?), Columbia, TN, per interview with Sol Gregory, son of Thomas. Married John? Brown.

THOMAS GREGORY	Lived Maury Co., TN Married 1814 Charlotte Co., VA to Edna Goode Elam; d. 22 Nov 1839, La. Thomas was living with his father, Joseph Gregory Sr, after Joseph remarried and moved 1807 to Charlotte Co. from adjoining Mecklenburg. Thomas Gregory owned a number of tracts of land in Charlotte Co., VA Thomas Gregory asked for letter of dismission from Meherrin Meeting House (Lunenburg) as he was about to remove (August 1826). A 1837 letter written by Thomas Gregory, Columbia, TN [possession of Jo Lee Spears] to nephew Josephus Gregory (son of John) asks that Josephus have "farther" sent to Tennessee by some safe hand, and to secure a gentle horse and a carriole. "Farther" would have been Joseph Gregory Senr, grandfather to Josephus who was son of John who had died in 1836 - the last of Joseph Senior's sons living in Virginia.

JANE GREGORY	Married Ashley Vaughan 22 Apr 1807, Charlotte Co., VA ; bond dated 20 Apr. names her father Joseph Gregory. Ashley Vaughan was enumerated in 1830 next to Edward Gregory (brother) Rutherford Co., TN. In 1840, Ashley Vaughan was enumerated in adj. Davidson Co., TN. James H. Gregory (son of Thomas of Columbia, TN) wrote abt 1848 that Aunt Vaughan lives near "Uncle Ned" (Edward Gregory).

April 9, 2007	Edward Gregory (son of Joseph Senior) Cemetery, Rutherford Co., TN (portion that fell in Davidson, Co.). 36° 02' 17"N, 86° 34' 42"W (NAD27) Listed as "Gregory Cem" on USGS La Vergne (TN) Topo Map. At Google maps, search "Treeview Court, TN" and, using Hybrid, zoom in the house on the end of the court, the cemetery is behind the house at the end. Photos were submitted Apr 9, 2007 by George Powell who descends from Joseph Gregory Senr through Edward's son Madison. Photo 1, photo 2, photo 3, photo 4. Edward's father, Joseph, died at Edward's, close to the same time Edward died, but Joseph's grave has not been identified.
