Subject: David SPANGLER (10040, 3G Grf, B40)

Birth: 23 Feb 1773 age 49y 4m 8d on tombstone

Note: __ ___ ____ Bio of Simon, David's son, and William's grandson, says "His father, G. F. Spangler, was of German descent, and was a soldier in the old colonial Indian wars. He was a noted marksman and wrester, and on one occasion he was captured by the savages, but escaped after being a prisoner for six months." However, G.F. doesn't match either David or William's name. Without a more specific date of the wars, either of them could be the soldier to whom the bio refers.

Military: 12 Feb 1799 Per KY State Historical Society Regester v.30 pg.11 (referred to, not looked up) David was made an Ensign on this date; Various papers/letters copied from vertical file at the Filson Club in Louisville (Jefferson Co) KY, My Evd # 1189.

Deed: 07 Aug 1799 Witness; Margaret (__________) (10081, 4G Grm); Jefferson Co., Kentucky; John & Margaret Abbott to David Spangler, 100 acres, being part of the land held in right of the dower of Margaret as widow and relict of William Spangler.
It appears that John & Margaret Abbott left their older children in Kentucky. Milly may have become acquainted with Peter Peckinpaugh through Henry Peckinpaugh, Peter's uncle, though only 4 years older, who was married to Catherine Spangler.
The book also says "How, or whether Catherine Spangler was related to William Spangler is not known. She was the daughter of George & Mary C Spangler, and married Henry 17 May 1804 in Jefferson Co KY." However, the Catherine who married Henry is the daughter of William & Margaret, not a George & Mary; Early Kentucky Settlers - The records of Jefferson County, Kentucky, Filson Club, Genealogical Publishing Co Inc: Baltimore MD, 1988, My Evd # 1192.

Census1800: __ ___ 1800 Jefferson Co., Kentucky; (I need to look up).

Occupation: __ ___ ____ Memorial History of Louisville v.1 pg.50 (get copy) says that William had a blacksmith shop on Lot 92 which was owned by Henry French; Various papers/letters copied from vertical file at the Filson Club in Louisville (Jefferson Co) KY Evd #1189.

Abraham Fordyce bk 5 pg 64 - 50 acres.
George Dougherty bk N pg 303 - 390 acres on Goose Creek.
There is also an entry for a Bernard Spangler, whose relationship to David is unknown. Bernard Spangler bought from James A Sturgus bk 4 pg 329 - 200 acres on south fork of Beargrass.

Deed: __ ___ ____ Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky; Spangler land records (index only, so don't have dates at this time). David sold land to:
Abraham Fordyce bk 4 pg 423 - 100 acres South Fork Goose Creek.
Richard Terrell bk 7 pg 507 - 564 1/2 acres South Fork Goose Creek.
Forwood & White bk I pg 240 - 47 acres South Fork Goose Creek.
James S Bate(+) bk K pg 430 - 1000 acres Goose Creek except 2 parcels.
John Herr(+) bk K pg 430 - all interest in 1000 acres on Goose Creek.
Lee White bk N pg 197 - 122 acres on Goose Creek.
Again, an entry also for Bernard Spangler to Leonard Hooke bk 6 pg 253 - 200 acres in Jefferson County.)
Who is Bernard Spangler???

Note: __ ___ ____ Note that the Bernard Spangler referred to above was of Paradise Twnship, York Co PA (wife Eve). He purchased land in Jefferson Co KY 25 Nov 1795. It might be worthwhile researching the York Co PA Spanglers (I have a gedcom of Bernard who was born 30 Sep 1745).

Deed: 18 Aug 1802 Jefferson, Clark Co., Indiana; On 18 Aug 1802 Richard Terrell and Lucy his wife sold land to David Spangler. They were both of Jefferson Co KY and it was "in consideration of the tract of land containing [564.5] acres conveyed by a deed bearing date of this day to the said Richard Terrell and called and known by the name of Abbots Station" - in other words, they traded land. The obit also says that David "who in 1802 owned 1000 acres of land where the Louisville waterworks stand. In that year he traded 500 acres for a similar tract in Clark County, Ind. The Clark County family still [1914] owns the Government patent to the original 1000 acres."

This is to certify that I am satisfied that David Spangler should have my daughter and that license should be issued according to the law this shall be your faithfull discharge from me given under my hand and seal this 3rd day of November 1798.
It's signed Elizabeth Neal and witnessed by Warden Pope.

Marriage Register (from Filson Club records) shows David Spangler and Eliza Durk license date 3 Nov [1798] and marriage date "do." from the previous line with says November 13t. Who married them is blank.

Previously, the names made things confusing because Elizabeth's mother was named Neal. However, subsequent research by Peggy Willmering of Spokane WA, showed that Elizabeth's mother was widow of a Durke, and married Thomas Nealle, explaining the confusion; Marriage Records of Jefferson Co KY 1781-1799 SLC 817859, My Evd # 1187.; Marriage Records Jefferson Co KY 1780-1854 Microfilm of original loose papers gathered by the Filson Club and having additional information added concerning the parties.
