Not in these state indexes: AL, CA, CO, GA, ID, IN, IL, KY, MN, MT, NC, NM, SC, TN. OH has only partial index, he's not the Joseph in Cincinnati w1 pg 111, w8 pgs 177, 181, 186

Additional notes of importance for the Thompson research (random order).

In 1850 Gilmer Georgia there is the following family on page 439 (33rd dist).
Thompson John 47 SC.
Frederick 24 SC.
Elizabeth 20 SC.
Joseph 13 GA.
Sarah 11 GA.
John 9 GA.
Rachel 1 GA.
Thompson Elizabeth 87 SC.

My assumption is that Elizabeth is the mother of John, who is the father of the rest of them. Also assume the wife died in childbirth of Rachel. COULD JOHN BE A BROTHER TO MY JOSEPH? MAKING ELIZABETH HIS MOTHER? However, they are SC vs NC

The 1840 census has Thompsons in Gilmer. - Samuel J died 1860 and possibly changed name from Burk and was born in Elizabethtown PA about 1805, then to Ashville NC. He marr Sarah Carter 1810 in Bunscomb Co NC then to Gilmer county circa 1834-37. This per conversation with Peggy McCarley who was G Grdau of Samuel thru his son James J. Gene Teague is also descended from this Samuel and confirms that Samuel J was born Burke and took on Thompson name as he was raised by them. Peggy address Rt 1 Box 182-P Blue Ridge TX 75004 phone 214-752-5090 - her Root Celler entries (30166) were: James J Thompson resided 1850 Gilmer (her grandfather), Lidia Thompson died 1875 Gilmer, and Samuel J Thompson died 1860 (g grandfather). Samuel's 1840 entry is 010001-221001. There is no connection to my Thompson's. I've entered this family in case it helps another Thompson researcher needs to get past the name change.

The other 1840 entries are:
John Thompson 1011001 111001001.
Linard Thompson 110001 11001.
Erwin Thompson 001120001 00011001.
John is probably the John E Price that was Captain of Mounted Volunteers of Gilmer Co from May 1838-Jul 1838 for Cherokee & Creek Indian War. He had a Samuel I Thompson as a private and a Samuel B Price on his military payroll.

The 1880 Ellijay 105th district, Gilmer, GA pg 550 has the following:.
Thompson Sarah 70 NC VA VA.
Dorcus 40 GA PA NC dau.
Sarah 34 GA PA NC dau.
Benjamin 10 GA GA GA grson.
Joseph 4 GA GA GA grson.
This Sarah Thompson is Sarah (Carter) widow of the above Samuel J Thompson.

Georgia counties immediately around Gilmer: Fannin to the north, Pickens/Cherokee to the south, Murray to the west, and Lumpkin, Davison, & Union to the east. East of them are several including Rabun. The NC counties in the vicinity are Cherokee, Clay, & Macon. SC counties in the vicinity are Pickens/Oconee, Pendleton, Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, Laurens, & Abbeville.

Some Thompson marriages in Gilmer Co Georgia per SLC 0219505.
George Thompson 30 Dec 1847 Maryan Butler pg 227.
Frederick Thompson 13 Mar 1853 Sarah Love pg 22.
John Thompson 19 Aug 1855 Susan Logan pg 66.

Women aren't indexed, didn't go thru them.

Thompsons in 1870 Murray Co Georgia.
pg 504A Sarah Thompson age 36 b.GA in house of David & Amanda Taylor Age is right that she could be a married daughter of them, or she could not be related at all.
pg 513 John W Thompson age 3 b.GA in house of Stephen & Margaret Gregory (no one else in household.
pg 517A Susan Thompson age 70 b.NC in house of Samuel & Jane Grigsby who are also both age 70.

Pickens Co History has brothers Lewis and William Thompson. A study of records in courthouse show nothing to believe that they are in any way related, although Lewis (b.1820/21 NC) had kids Eliza (Elizabeth b.1840), Mary J (b.1844, Nancy A (b.1852), Caroline (b.1854), & John (b.1855) - same as Joseph & Sarah had. Of course they ARE common names. Lewis also had son Clark (b.1846). Jack Thompson of Chattanooga TN is a desc of Lewis. He says there are lots of Thompsons in Talking Rock Cemetery, but cemetery listing doesn't show any of mine. Lewis was in the Pickens Co voting record of 1896-7 age 75 diest or ward #1101 with others.
