WESTMINSTER ABBEY, LONDON It is hard to imagine Westminster atthe time of the Conquest, when it occupied an island site amidthe marshes that flanked the Thames. Since William theConqueror recieved the English crown here on Christmas Day 1066,coronations have always been conducted in Westminster Abbey. Anearlier Saxon monastery was completely destroye by the Danesduring the eighth century. Wesminster's history as aBenedictine house dates to its foundation by St. Dunstan in 959,although it was Edward the Confessor who established its statusas the royal church of england following its consecration on 28December 1065, just one week before his death. Henry III waslargely responsible for building the magnificent abbey churchthat stands today, work on which began in 1245, favouring theFrench Gothic style, which placed greater emphasis on heightthan the particular English interpretation that had evolved bythen. Flying buttresses were used as a means of supporting theheight of French cathedrals, a technique deemed visually ugly byEnglish builders, who preferred to restrict the height and useinternal methods of support. Work on the new church advancedrapidly, and it was reopened in 1269. Although much of the navewas not completed until well over a century later, fortnatelythe architect was content to follow the style of hispredeccessor, thereby maintaining the visual continuity.Westminster Abbey is not merely a church of unsurpassed beautyit is also the last resting place of English monarchs - fromHenry III in 1272 to George III in 1820. Without doubt, theabbey's subline architectural achievement is the Henry VIIchapel, originally founded byt eh monarch early in the sixteenthcentury with the intention of crating a shrine to Henry VI.This plan never came to fruition and so the masterpiece of royalmason Robert Vertue was adopted by its instigator for himselfand his queen, Elizabeth. The fan-vaulted ceiling is elaboratelydecorated with the most complex tracery imaginable, the finestexample of that art form in England. Almost ever square ich ofthe chapel seems to be adorned with some form of intricatedecoration and, although the overall effect can be almostoverwhelming, it remains a quite breathtaking piece of work. The royal tomb in the chapel is the work of a Florentinecontemporary of Michelangelo, sculptor Pietro Torrigiano, whowas commisssioned to create the most moving, gilt-bronzedeffigies of Henry and Elizabeth. However, kings and queens arenot the only ones celebrated in death; the abbey houses theGrave to the Unknown Soldier, a nation's tribute to those slainduring the First World War. Famous names from the art, literature and science mingle with numberous outrageouslyostentatious memorials erected to members of the nobility.

WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL, WINCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE Winchester Cathedralis the second longest in Europe after St. Peter's in Rome, afact one would readily dispute based on external assessmentalone, as the building somhow fails to crate an impression ofgreat length. As soon as one enters the soaring,fourteenth-century. Perpendicular nave, however, such doubtsare dispelled and the church seems to stretch to infinity beyondthe choir screen, certainly appearing even longer than itsactual 556 feet. Work on the present church began in 1079 underthe direction of Bishop Walkelin to replace the huge Saxonfoundation of Old Minster that housed the relics of St. Swithun,a ninth-century bishop whose name is forever associated with wetEnglish summers. A shrine was eventually erected to Swithun inthe new church, and became an important place of pilgrimage; fora time, ony Thomas a Becket's shrine in Canterbury was morevisited. Romanesque architecture from that firest phase ofreconstruction survives intact in both north and south transeptsand also in the crypt, which is no prone to flooding in winter.Problems with Winchester's raised water table had seriouslythreatened the cathedral's very survival at the turn of thecentury when it was discovered that the original timberfoundations were disintegrating and causing struturalinstability. The cathedral's saviour is generally acknowledgedas William Walker, a deep-sea diver who spent five years workingin up to 20 feet of water underpinning the walls by replacingrotten timbers and layers of soggy peat with countless bags ofdement. Winchester was once capital of Wessex and then of allEngland during the reign of Alfred the Great, a status itretained until well after the Norman Conquest when it wasgradually eclipsed by London. One of the most lavish royalevents to have taken place in the cathedral was thepost-Dissolution wedding of Mary Tudor to Philip of Spain in1554, ironically the same person who, as King of Spain, wouldlater be sending his Armada to interrupt Sir Francis Drake'sgame of bowlsin Plymouth. Several of the Saxon kings who wererowned and buried here are reprsented by their coloufullyinscribed mortuary chests. These line the presytery, which isdominated by the massive, fifteenth-century stone screen whosemany delicately carved niches are filled with quite superbemodern replicas of the original saints' statues that weredesecrated and smashed during the Reformation. The Winchester'swindows were once adorned by sumptuous displays of painted glassis evident from those fragments that survived the vandalisminflicted ont he church by Cromwell's Parliamentarian troopsduring the Civil War. The confusing, coloured patchwork of thenave's west window was created from shards and segments rescuedfrom the shattered original.

CORONATION NOTES The sudden death of John during his war withthe barons meant that his son, Henry, who was in safekeeping atGloucester, had to be crowned quickly. John had lost the statecrown in the Wash and the royal regalia was at Westminster, sothe nine-year old king was crowned with his mother's goldtorque.

260080605. Eleanor Berenger of Provence Queen Consort of England 1, 2 was born in 1223. She died 3 on 24 Jun 1291 in Amesbury, Wiltshire. Her sealing to parents was submitted. Her baptism was submitted. Her endowment was submitted. [Parents]

CORONATION NOTES Eleanor's coronation was a major occasion.Henry had spent a vast sum on having the Palace of Westminsterrefurbished to a standard previously unknown in England inreadiness for the Queen. This was the first time the coronationprocessio left from the Tower of London to Wesminster and Henrytook this opportunity for a great display of pageant andgrandeur.
