Denney, Rosannah Boaz "ROSE" (b. 3 MAR 1850, d. 21 JAN 1912)
Note: Her name may have been Rosa Ann and/or AKA "ROSA" or Rosanna. Lived Surry County, NC.

Rosannah and her husband Russell are buried in the Cedar Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Surry County, NC.

Russell was a Primitive Baptist Minister, per William Denney, four of their sons went on to become pastors.

Rosannah and Russell were cousins.

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

Their son Jason married a cousin also.

Irene's husband John Wall was a Methodist Minister.

Denney, Azariah (b. 8 APR 1844, d. 6 JUN 1864)
Note: Per the Bird Denny book by Zeb Denny, Azariah was killed in the Civil War at the Battle of Cold Harbor. He served with Co. C, 21st North Carolina Regt. If this is the same Azariah, he may have enlisted at age 18 on 8-14-1862.

Per a Pansy Denny Broughton, a box of letters wrote by Azariah Denny during the Civil War were found in the attic of one Curtis Denny. It would be interesting if any more data were to come of this discovery!

He is buried at the Joel Denny Cemetery, Burge Road, Pilot Mountain, Surry County, NC.

Azariah Denny was recruited at age 18. He joined Aug 14, 1862 to serve for
the duration of the civil war. He was in General Hospital #1 in Richmond, VA,
November 1862. He was taken prisoner by the enemy somewhere around
Chancellorsville May 3, 1863. In a letter to his Father (Joel Denny) he states: "I went
from the battlefield to Hookers Headquarters and from there to Washington and
then to Baltimore from there to Wilmington, Delaware, then to Philadelphia and
then to Fort Delaware." He was then sent to City Point, VA, for exchange May 23,
1863. He was in Eastern North Carolina campaign in the spring of 1864 before
he was killed June 6, 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA.

page 54.

While Azariah was in the hospital, he wrote letters not only to his parents
but also to William Denny, his uncle. In his different letters he mentions the
following people that I have not figured out as of the present time. They are
Aunt Sally, Aunt Kizie, Ellen, Grand Papy Jones, Cousin T. Flippin.

He identifies Jonathan Flinchum as having a brother named James in one of his
letters.

Azariah was in Company C 21st Regiment of NC Troops. Lt. Logan T. Whitlock,
led his company through 4 long and hard years of the war. This Company left
Mt. Airy June 19, 1861 and marched to Danville for 5 days arriving there June
24, 1861. They were munstered in and were assigned to 11th Regiment NC
Volunteers.

Denney, David Jones (b. 30 NOV 1861, d. 6 MAR 1948)
Note: MEMOIRS OF GUY DENNEY
In August of 1937 when my wife and I and family of three children started the track backward over the trail of our ancestors to this promised land, I was fulfilling a dream that had lingered in me from childhood.
The story had been handed down how our band of ancestors migrated north west from the home lands in 1814 and upon being confronted with the obstacles of pioneer days, looked back and saw their old home and decided to give up the attempt. However, a nights rest in camp renewed their hopes and they decided to push on. This looking back and seeing their old home was not a memory only, it was a reality. In 1937 as we back trailed our ancestors of 1814 we came in sight of the land mark of the Dennys. That same Pilot Mountain with its knob on top that has proclaimed to the world all these years that there is the land of the Denny. As we drew nearer all inquiries were rewarded with the information that it was still the land of the Dennys.
We secured a few names along the way and were finally directed to the house of David, who was reputed to know more about the family history than any other living Denny. As we drew up in the dusk of his front yard a second look was unnecessary to tell us that a Denny was greeting us. His looks, his speech and his mannerisms brought to life that latent dream that had been handed down of his ancestors. Before us stood a Denny of Surry County, NC . The record of my 30 years work had not lied to me. David is a man of medium stature. Kindliness is written in his face. Hospitality is born in him. He has a keen mind and from my standpoint, is a sound reasoner on all subjects he discusses. That devilish twinkle in his eye typifies the mirth that is in him.
We slept in the house of David and partook of their wonderful food which his good wife and daughters were surely artists in preparing. David lives on the farm of his father facing Pilot Mountain. On the death of his father, David followed in his footsteps and has done much of the surveying since that time. The entire family are primitive Baptists.
In conclusion I will say that his is a wonderful people and that he lives in a wonderful country.

David was a farmer and surveyor.

Per the World Family Tree # 2553, David and his second wife Delila had 7 children. We have at the present time 10 children listed, this needs further investigating.

His second wife Delila's DOB based upon being 19 years of age on her marriage license.

David was buried in the Whitaker Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery. He was baptized on 27 July, 1930. His second wife Delila is also buried there.

His wife Rebecca was buried in the Joel Denny cemetery, Surry County, NC. Per Ned Lankford, she was moved to the Whitaker's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Whitaker's Chapel Road, Surry County, NC Cemetery by her son John Willis Denny.

David was born in the Joel Denny home place, his wife Rebecca was born in the John Hancock home place.

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

I did not have a child named Chester for this family, Ned Lankford tells me that Chester was their first born so I am adding to my database. Chester is buried at the Whitakers Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, Surry County, NC. He was buried at the Joel Denney Cemetery but was moved to Whitaker's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Whitaker's Chapel Road, Surry County, NC by his half brother John Willis Denny.

John is buried Whitaker's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Whitaker's Chapel Road, Surry County, NC, between Pilot Mountain & Cedar Hill Church.

Lamecie and husband lived in VA.

Alton lived in VA.

Hylton lived Surry County, NC. His first name may have been spelled "HILTON". His DOB and that of his wife are estimated based upon being 19 years of age at their marriage.

Gilmer lived Surry County, NC, was a Minister.

Fern, Guy Denney visited this person and collected much family history data from her. She was unmarried but later married, no data on husband. She taught school.

Alice was buried at the Denny Family Cemetery but then was moved to the Whitaker Chapel Cemetery by her brother John.

Denney, Cary Bird (b. 23 JAN 1846, d. 21 JAN 1921)
Note: Name may have been Carey Burd Denny or Carey Byrd Denney with AKA of "BYRD". The World Family Tree # 2553 shows his first name spelled yet another way "BIRD".

Per correspondence with Glen Gordon, his first name may be spelled Carey Bird as shown in the Bible belonging to Martha Ellen Key Denney

He was a Primitive Baptist Minister. He served as the minister of the Mulberry Primitive Church beginning in 1894 per church records.

Per the "Surry County Heritage Book, Vol. 1", Byrd was in the Confederate forces soon after the Battle of Cold Harbor, escaped injury, but caught measles and was left by the roadside as Lee's Army fled towards Appomattox. The Yankees picked him up and kept him prisoner at Richmond, VA until the war ended. He served as a Private with Co. I, 21st North Carolina Regt.

His wife's name may not have included the "ELEANOR" and/or ELLEN may have been an AKA for ELEANOR.

He is buried with his wife Eleanor at the Bird Denny Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, Surry County, NC. This may be the Bird Denny home place on Burge Road per Butch Johnson.

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

Josephine is buried at the Denny Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, Surry County, NC.

Leonard had a family & lived near Pilot Mountain, NC.

Betty Denny and her sister Ida married brothers, there is confusion as to their last names, may have been KEY or MAY. Betty's first name may have been spelled "BETTIE" per Fred Merrick's data.

Aida's first name may have been spelled "ADA" per data from Fred Merrick.

Denney, William (b. 25 NOV 1821, d. 2 DEC 1886)
Note: Per Ned Lankford, the 1886 death date can not be correct. A Jack Badgett provided a new headstone for Wiliam which shows the death date as Dec 2, 1886. Per Ned, William's will was prepared on Dec 21, 1886 and was executed on March 11, 1892. This would indicate he died in 1892. In his will, William left everything he owned to his four living sisters, Patsy, Sally, Polly and Elizabeth.
This theory on his death date may also be incorrect as his sister Elizabeth mentioned above died in November 1891 so she could not have been living if he died 1892!
