Key, Lewis Jones "KAPP" (b. 2 SEP 1843, d. 3 MAR 1899)

Note: See notes for Achillis Shedrick Key on his role in the Confederate Army.

The 1870 Surry County, NC census finds the family as Lewis a farmer with wife Ellen , a farmer with $400 real estate & $250 of personal property. They had two children, Henry age 2 and Lewis age 7/12.

The 1880 Surry County, NC census finds them as Lewis with wife Ellen, and children Joseph, Samuel, and Squire.

Family tradition has it that Lewis provided the property for the Union Primitive Baptist Church. Lewis purchased 30 acres of land in 1884 on Dobson Road from Leonard Jones, this may be the property where the Church is located.

Lewis' estate was valued at $5704.87, it was divided into six equal parts of $950.81, there being six surviving children. Each of the sons had money advanced to them, Joe $180, Sam $95, and Squire $545. This was deducted from their shares.

His second wife Martha Harbour was a sister to Matilda Ruth Harbour who married Joseph Key, oldest son of Lewis by his first wife. Thus, Martha was a stepmother and sister-in-law to Joseph Key at the same time. My computer reports will go nuts!!!

Denney, Gabriel Elder (b. 20 DEC 1842, d. 14 JUL 1927)
Note: Was Pastor of the Ararat (Cedar Hill) Primitive Baptist Church for over 50 years. Donated the land for the church cemetery which was originally owned by Azariah Denny. The Primitive Baptist do not pay their preachers, so he had to look for other means to support his family. He made his farm, probably the most complete and self contained farm in the County. Although he could not do heavy work such as plowing, he kept busy supervising operations of his cane mill, corn mill, sawmill, and blacksmith shop on the farm on 60 acres North side of the Mill Dam on Pilot Creek. He later added 50 more acres, this was located on the North side of Pilot Montain and is now part of the Pilot Mountain State Park

Received into the Church as a member in Nov 1866. He was licensed as a minister in Sep 1868 and was ordained in 1869. He was elected Moderator & Pastor of Ararat Church Sep 1876 and tendered his resignation as pastor ( Due to his infirmities) Oct 1926.

In 1875, Gabriel bought the 112 acre farm located on Pilot Creek at the base of Pilot Mountain. This was a two story frame house with a separate building used as a kitchen. This Denny home has been acquired by the State and is now part of Pilot Mountain State Park.

He served as a Private in the Civil War with Company E., 53rd North Carolina Regiment, Hills Division. Per the "Surry County Heritage Book, Vol.1", Gabriel received a wound in the foot and limped the remainder of his life. He enlisted at age 19 3-27-1862.

Gabriel Denny was born in Surry in 1842 to Joel & Nancy Jones Denny.
He volunteered at Flat Shoal in Surry April 17, 1862 and was mustered in
April 30, 1862 at Camp Mangum, Raleigh. He was listed as absent on sick furlough
and was discharged Feb. 1, 1863 for disability. The reason given was that he
had been unfit for duty for 60 days.

Gabriel and wife Sarah Delphina are buried at Ceder Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, Surry County, NC.

This family also had twins born and died 7/22/1891, they only lived for 30 minutes.

Per the World Family Tree # 2553, this family had 13 children, we only have 11 at the present time.

Their marriage date may have been 6-11-1868 per Fred Merrick. The day of his death may have been the 14th instead of the 4th.

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

Sally committed suicide. She is buried at the Cedar Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, NC.

Mary never married, lived Winston-Salem, NC, buried Cedar Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Surry County, NC.

Denney, John (b. 23 MAR 1840, d. 20 FEB 1919)
Note: Per Sylvester Denney, John was married twice but no details. I had John married three times, once to Laura, and once to a Lucy Hancock and once to Lucy Ashburn. The two Lucys may be one and the same, perhaps Lucy Hancock was previously married to a ASHBURN!. John and Lucy were married at John Hancock's home which leads me to believe she was Hancock. The marriage license refers to her her as ASHBURN, I will keep her as HANCOCK for now. UPDATE: Lucy was married previously to an Ashburn, Lucy was a sister to Rebecca Hancock that married John's brother David.

John and his wife Laura are buried at the Denney- Venable Family Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, NC. His second wife Lucy is also buried there. This cemetery is supposedly located off 268 near Tucker & Dezern Store. He was laid to rest on Feb 21, 1919

The DOB for his wife Lucy is based upon her age at the time John and Lucy married.

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

DOCTOR is a name, not a title. His DOD may be Jan 14 per Ned Lankford.

Denney, Edmond (b. 5 OCT 1811, d. 14 DEC 1887)
Note: They lived on a farm near Pilot Creek, 1 to 2 miles south of Pilot Mountain, NC in Surry County He and his wife are buried on a hill top, west of Pilot Creek, marked by plain stones. This may be called the Edmond Denny Cemetery. I visited this site in 1999, it is on Shoals Road (SR 2048), it is on a hill behind a barn and has barbed wire around it. It was very overgrown at my visit.

This is the grandfather of Sylvester Denny who compiled the book " History of Azariah Denny Family".

WE have listed a daughter "Ann", there is some suspect here, Joel Denny had a ANN listed for this family in his letter, Guy Denney in his book did not list an ANN.

The following is an obituary from the Primitive Baptist Association minutes, this obituary further supports the contention that I have too many daughters listed for Edmond.

"Edmond Denny was born and lived and died in Surry County, NC. He was the son of Azariah Denny. He was born on the 5th day of October, 1811. He also professed a hope in Christ and joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Ararat and was called to the office of Deacon which office he filled until his death. He also served the church in the capacity of clerk for many years. His death occurred on the 14th day of December, 1887, aged 76 years, 3 months and 9 days. He was married to Miss Francis H. Farris, who bore unto him five children, two sons and three daughters. She was also a devoted member of the Baptist church and was called from by death on the 27th day of December, 1883. Thus the subjects of our notice who were the highly favored of God, after living up to a ripe old age, fell victims to death, leaving their families, their churches and their long line of acquaintance to mourn in bereavement, but their loss to us is only a matter of time while to them it is gain eternal. While we must suffer in bereavement only for a time, we still have their pious tracks to trace, which often calls our inquiring minds after them to their present mansion of rest. They were often appointed by their respective churches to represent them in the Association which appointment they were faithful to fill and then return to their homes and churches and report the order of their mission but now they are gone to the general Association above never to return but to remain in the perfect praise and presence of God forever."

This was evidently written by A. M. Denny, (Achilles M. Denny), he was commonly known as A.M. Denny.

Denney, Joel (b. 19 SEP 1813, d. 4 MAY 1896)
Note: Joel lived and died on his Farm near Pilot Mountain, NC at the age of 82 years. In 1937, his son David J. Denny was living on this farm. He and Nancy are buried at the Joel Denny Cemetery, probably located on or near this farm.

He lived in the Deron Community of Surry County. His home place is a part of the Azariah Denny land grant made in the 1780s.

Three of his sons fought in the Civil War, Joel himself was opposed to slavery and never owned a slave.

Per the book "HERITAGE OF SURRY COUNTY NC VOL 1, 1983", Joel had traced his ancestry back to one Samuel Denny 1635-1710 who came to America from the Avon River section of England, settling first in Tidewater, VA. (Joel made no mention of this Samuel (1635-1710) in his letter to A. M. Denny). This Samuel's son David 1665-1733 married Rebecca Bell and they had a son John 1690-1765. John and his wife Sarah had a boy whom they named Samuel born 1715 after his great grandfather. The rest of the Denny heritage is outlined below in Joel's letter to A. M. Denny.

This Joel Denny is the one that wrote the letter (Prior to his death in 1896) on Denny history to Achilles M. Denny and deserves our gratitude for leaving us some links to the past. Data in this letter has held up to a great deal of scrutiny by later genealogists with very little to dispute.

THE DENNY FAMILY
HISTORY OF THE DENNY FAMILY AS GIVEN BY JOEL DENNY IN A LETTER TO A.M. DENNY (ACHILLIS) MANY YEARS AGO

Some time before the Revolutionary War one Samuel Denny came from across the waters and married a woman by the name of Southard, settled in Amherst, Virginia and raised 17 children. Their names as I recollect them were William, Azariah, John, Charles, Henry, Lazarus, Benjamin, James, and Shered. As to the daughters, I recollect few of their names at present, Keziah and Nancy only.

Keziah married John Robertson and settled in Grayson County, VA. That explains how the Denny family are connected with the Robertson and Jennings families.

One of the girls (I do not remember her name) married Britton Meeks, for short they called him "PRETTY" Meeks, although he was quite a homely man.

Some of the sons were killed in the Revolutionary War. Some time before the war, the old man Samuel Denny and several of his sons came to Surry County, NC and settled on the Hill Farm on the Arrarat River near the mouth of Pilot Creek. He remained there until he lost his wife, whose remains now lie under a rock pile on the south side of Pilot Creek, near the mouth, at the foot of the hill. After the death of his wife, the old man went west with some of his sons and died there, but I am not informed as to where. The book Heritage of Surry County NC Vol 1 1983 gives a different account of this story, it states that Joel said Samuel went to Gallia County Ohio with some of his sons!

Now back to his sons, James Denny settled in Patrick County, VA near the Bull Mountain and raised several children. One of his sons was named Azariah and one of his daughters married Richard Pilson.

Charles Denny (one of the first family) settled on what is now known as the A. M. Denny farm on the Arrarat River but sold out later and went to Kentucky.

John Denny (one of the first family) settled on the farm where Daniel Stoltz lived and died on Bull Run Creek. He had two sons, Samuel and William. Samuel married a woman by the name of Wooten who was killed by a careless act with a gun. He then married a sister of the same woman and settled on the farm where Stanford now lives. He sold out later and went to Gallia County, Ohio. William Denny, his brother married Sally Hill, sister to Richard Hill, and settled where Martin Hiatt lived and died. He had two sons, John and Obadiah. He also sold out and went to Gallia County, Ohio.

Azariah Denny (one of the first family) married Sally Wise Felton (Fulton?) and settled on the Martin Flinchum farm on Pilot Creek. He raised 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls. Their names were James, Louis, Joshua, Harrel, Henry, William, and Jordan. The girls were Asenith, Polly, Sally, Nancy, Elizabeth and Rachel. Joshua married Jane Watkins and Asenith married Elisha Gentry and the two families went to South Carolina. James married Rebecca Vanderpool, Harrel married Elizabeth Hill, a half sister to Noah Hill, William married Ann Fulk and Jordan married for his first wife Martha Burchum and for his second, Polly Gibson. James, Harrel, Henry and William with their families went west and settled near Gallipolis in Gallia County, Ohio. Jordan lived with his father on Pilot Creek until his father's death and several years afterwards, then sold out and went to Johnson, County, MO and settled near Kingsville and died there. He had three sons, Harvey, John and William. Harvey married Rebecca Fulk, a sister to Bryson Fulk and they had two children, Martha and Elizabeth. William Denny is now living in Missouri.

The old man Azariah Denny's girls mentioned were married as follows: Elizabeth to Wm. Bray, Polly to Jesse Hill, Sally to James Stone, Nancy to William Stone, and Rachel to John Fletcher. The most of them went to Ohio, Fletcher and wife went to Tennessee.

Shered died leaving no family.

William Denny, one of the first family named, married Rebecca Hooper in Albemarle County, Virginia and moved to Surry County, NC and settled on the Arrarat River near Cedar Hill Church about 1773. He settled on an ax entry before the land offices were opened in the state and the land has been in the possession of the Denny Family ever since. He raised 7 children, Samuel, Lazarus, Azariah, Nancy, Martha, Keziah, and Sally. Samuel died a young man; Lazarus married Suzannah Burchum and raised several children, William, Azariah, Sally, Rebecca and Michol. They all went to Preble County, Ohio about 1825. He lost his wife and married Mary Ballard and they had 3 children, one boy David B. Denny. Azariah, son of the old man William Denny married Miss Elizabeth Stone and they raised Joel, Edmond, Martin, William, Nancy, Martha, Sally, Polly, and Elizabeth. All the girls remained single and Polly still resides at the old home. All of the rest of the family are dead. Joel married Nancy Jones, daughter of old Elder John Jones, and raised John, Gabriel, Bird, and David. Azariah was killed in the late war. Joel's girls were Elizabeth, who married Johathan Flinchum, Rosanna who married Marion Vaughn. Edmond Denny married Franklin Farris and raised Ann Denny, Coleman Denny, Mary who married A. S. Key, Ellen who married L. J. Key, and Nancy who married John W. Jones. Martin married Parmelia Key and raised Achillis Denny, Lewis Denny and Sally who married Aaron Fulk and Nancy who married J. F. Whittaker. Wm. Denny lived and died on the old homestead unmarried.

Old man Wm. Denny's girls married as follows: Nancy married Levy Burchum and settled in Grayson County, Virginia, Martha married Nathan Holt and moved to Ohio. Keziah lived with her brother, Azariah Denny. Sally married Achillis Key and they raised 8 children, Lewis, Wm., Augustin, and the girls, Emily, Nahalt, Parmelia, Lucinda, and Matilda.

The families of the later generations are as well known by all, likely, as the writer and hence I will not go into further particulars unless some questions are asked concerning some branch of the family.

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

Azariah was a Confederate Soldier. He was killed in the Battle of Cold Harbor in the Civil War. Giles Whitaker, a neighbor of the Denny family and a chaplain in the Confederate Army, wrote Joel, Azariah's father, a letter, appropriately edged in black, about the tragedy. This letter was kept for many years in the David Denny family after Joel died. Whitaker's account revealed that Azariah had attempted to make a dash from one fence-rail barricade to another, but was shot down before he reached safety. This information is from the "Surry County Heritage Book, Vol. 1".

Three of Joel's sons fought on the side of the Confederacy during the Civil War, in addition to Azariah above, Gabriel was wounded and partially crippled for the remainder of his life. Carey Bird fought to the end of the war and walked back home to Surry County, NC.
