Denney, Sylvester "DOCK" (b. 15 MAR 1904, d. 15 JUL 1989)

Note: This Sylvester is the Author of "Genealogy of the Family of Azariah Martin Denny". This book is available from the Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (LDS) Church Family History Center (on film).

He lived at 1840 Villa Drive, Greensboro, Guilford County, NC.

AKA "DOCK"

Sylvester "DOCK" Denney was buried in July, 1989 at the Ararat Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Surry County, NC. Rest in peace Sylvester and thanks for leaving future generations some trails to follow.

MEMORIES OF SYLVESTER "DOCK" DENNY
I remember that I started school in the Fall after I was 5 years old. We went to Gordon School, which was about 3 miles distance, and walked each way, no matter the weather. The school was a one room log cabin. The only heat came from a wood burning heater placed in the center of the room. There were no toilet facilities. The girls used the woods on one side of the school and the boys used the other side. The boys cut wood for the heater and also got drinking water from a spring some distance away. In the school, the girls sat on one side of the room and the boys sat on the other side.

The most frightening experience I had was when I was almost struck by lightening. Daddy "Coley" & I were in the cornfield hoeing corn. There was some small clouds overhead but the sun was shining and there had been no thunder. Daddy was at the far end of the field & I was a little behind when the lightening struck. I felt like it hit me on top of the head and ran all the way to my feet. I fell to my knees, and came up making tracks.

We left the Farm about 1923 in the fall of the year and came to Greensboro, Guilford County, NC. Not being experienced in any line of work, and only a seventh grade education, it was difficult to get a job. The ones I did get paid very little and didn't last long. Finally on August 16, 1928, I went to work for Duke Power Company, in the Electric Meter Dept. and retired from there March 31, 1971 at age 67.

I have lived alone for the last 20-25 years. I enjoy wrestling matches, but my favorite pastime is fishing.

Aunt Martha & uncle Nathaniel Fulk lived about 1/2 mile from Cedar Hill Church. They had a two story log house which had been framed around the logs. It is still being used (1978) by a daughter of their youngest and only surviving child, Mrs. Mattie Burge who is nearly 90 years of age now (1978), and lives across the road from the old home place. Mother lived with aunt Martha Fulk from the time she was about ten to fifteen years old until she was married. Aunt Martha was in poor health, so mother stayed there to help her.

Mother could read but not write, so she was always wanting me to write letters for her. When she was nearly 55 years old, I told her if she could read, she could learn to write, so I taught her to write. She did not have good handwriting but it was easy to read.

These memories I (Richard F Denney) have extracted from Sylvester's Book. He has numerous memories about growing up and life.
