Dugger, William Warren (b. 21 JUL 1878, d. 9 JAN 1967)

The following is taken from the book " Milestones of Memories "

In 1909, William Warren Dugger and his wife the former Cora Della King, with two daughters, Hazel and Doris came to Lewis. With the aid of an architect named Curtis of Dodge City, Mr. Dugger constructed a two story house at the corner of Duncan and Monroe.
W.W. as he was called was a very active in the Christian Church and community affairs. He and Mrs. Dugger always taught boys and young mens Sunday School Auditorium, which Mrs. Dugger directed.
W.W. was the Manager at the Farmers Coop Grain and Lumber Company for several years. He took two years leave to live in Long Beach, California, where Hazel graduated from High School. Hazel then spent four years at Kansas University, majoring in Piano and graduated in 1923. Doris also graduated from Kansas University, majoring in Music Education. She directed all of Hazel's woman choruses, who sang at her concerts of piano, organ, trumpet and violin performed in the Lewis Christian Church, using the Vose Grand Piano and Baldwin Organ. Doris married Otho Lafferty of Kinsley, were they lived with their two children, Ann and Kerry.

In 1924 Hazel married Norton Dowd of Wichita, where they lived for twenty years, then moved to Kansas City, were Norton died. Hazel and their son, Dana moved back to Lewis. Her father with a crew of two. Merlyn Hart and 12 year old Dana, assembled and constructed Hazel's home at 601 Gorham. This was in 1944, World War II was coming to and end, and lumber windows, doors and metal pipes could not be bought, so we used what was available. First Hazel bought the 100 by 500 foot lots from O.M. Derley estate. Then an abandoned school house was purchased and moved onto the lots. Then Jess Chalk's barn was purchased, torn down and the lumber moved to the lots. Next native field stone, which had been an Episcopal Church at 606 Edwards was trucked over for the foundation and fire place. Finally a small barn and work shop was moved by Hazel's Uncle Clarence King and cousin Keith, from Centerview to tack onto the west end of the porchof the former school house. The whole thing was covered with shingles. There in that shop was where the Cub Scouts met for 6 or 7 years.

Dana graduated from Lewis High School in 1949. After 5 years studying architecture at Kansas University he graduated in 1954 and has his own business in Overland Park. His latest design is a Condominium at Sun Rise Point, Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri
