Denney, Sarah (b. JAN 1798, d. 14 JAN 1870)

Note: The 1820 Preble County, Ohio census finds the family living a dozen houses from Sarah's father Lazarus Denney. Males: 1<10 and 1=27-45. These would be Jonathan, age 5, Nathan's son by his first wife Deborah and Nathan age 28. Females: 2<10, 1=16-26, 1=27-45 and 1=45+. These would be Martha age 3, Nathan's daughter by his first wife, Elizabeth age 10m, Nathan's wife Sarah (Denney) age 22 and an unknown older female, most likely Nathan's mother, Martha (Hawkins) Cook.

The 1850 Henry County, Iowa census shows the family as Nathan, wife Sarah and children Eli age 25, Amos age 20, Henry age 18, Obadiah age 16, Louisa age 14, and Elihu age 11. There was also a Jonathan Bond age 22, born TN living with them. Nathan had $8000 of real estate at that time.

Nathan, his wife Sarah and children William, Eli, Susanna, Isaac, Hannah, Charity, Amos, Henry, Obadiah, Louise and Elihu were granted a certificate from the Elks MM in Ohio to the Salem MM in Henry County, Iowa on June 15, 1839.

On Sep 14, 1849, Nathan sold land in the NE 1/4, NW 1/4, Sec. 8. T70, R7 to his son-in-law Henry Lamm.

Nathan bought land in the SW 1/4 of Sec. 8, T70, R7 from his brother Eli on Sep 4, 1854. On the same day, Nathan and Sarah sold land in the S 1/2, SW 1/4, Sec. 8, T70, R7 to his brother-in-law John Spray.

From Biographical Review written in Henry County, Iowa 1906, on Payton W.
Cook:

"his paternal grandparents were Eli and Elizabeth (Denny) Cook natives of
Ohio. Who in the year 1836 came to Henry county, Iowa settling in Salem
township where Mr. Cook entered land from the government. He thus became
the owner of many acres northwest of Salem and also large holdings in Salem
and he had thirteen children to all of whom he gave land with the exception
of one son who went to California and was never heard from again he was
closely associated with early pioneer development in his part of the state.
And when he passed away in May 1874 the community mourned the last of a
representative pioneer, he had survived his wife for only a brief period her
death having occurred in Feb. 1874."

William Denney had her husband Eli as DOB Jun 21, 1777 and DOD Sep 28, 1778. There is an obvious problem here. Cherie Logan, on her Internet Home Page said that he died at 79y 4m 22d on April 30, 1874, I am using that data for the time being. DOB confirmed by data from Linda Brandt

Elizabeth and Eli were laid to rest at the Salem South Cemetery, Salem Township, Henry County, Iowa (Old Quaker Cemetery)

From "Henry County, Iowa, Salem South Cemetery" compiled by the Henry County
Genealogical Society, published by the Iowa Genealogical Society:

COOK Eli - d. 30 April 1874 - 79 yrs 4 Mos 22 Days
Wife, Elizabeth - d. 15 Feb 1874 - 72 yrs 7 Mos 9 Days

Denney, John (b. 15 MAR 1806, d. 27 DEC 1886)
Note: Much of the data contained herein for John Denney and his descendants was provided by Shirley (Graham) Johnson, his 3rd great-granddaughter.

John is buried at Pilot Grove, Lee County, IA (Pilot Grove Cemetery). This cemetery is located 0.8 north of Highway 16 on Pilot Grove Road, and sets about 1/4 mile west of the road on top of a hill, in a grove of trees, in the middle of what is now a soybean field. The cemetery is fenced in in but in disrepair, no one is taking care of it. Most of the headstones have fallen over but one that was still standing was that of John Denney.

John was disowned by the Elks MM, Preble County, Ohio on Feb 16, 1833 for "DISUNITY".

Grandfather of Attorney Charles Denney of Fairbury, Nebraska.

Shirley Johnson of Pomeroy, WA gives a death date of Dec 27, 1879 which is what is stated in the obituary for his wife Sarah.

John and Sarah moved to Iowa in 1846 or spring of 1847; their son Eli was 5 months old when they arrived which would put their arrival date about May, 1847.

The 1850 Lee County, Iowa census finds the family as John Denning age 43, a farmer with $700 of real estate, wife Susannah age 40; sons James 21; Joseph 19; Henry 15; Francis 7; Eli 3; and daughter Susannah age 18. There was no Ellen shown here and if she was born June 10, 1849, I would think she should be here!

The 1860 Marion Township, Lee County, Iowa census finds the family as John a farmer with $2200 of real estate and $442 of personal property.

OBITUARY FOR SARAH (COOK) DENNEY PER SHIRLEY JOHNSON

Sarah Denney died at her home near Pilot Grove, Lee County April 15, 1900 in her 92nd year. Although at her great age death was rather unexpected, having been as well as common until the morning of the day she died, death occurring in the evening. Deceased was born in Butler County, Ohio, August 14, 1808, daughter of James and Ellen Cook. She was united in marriage to John Denney in 1828. To this union was given 10 children, 7 of whom still survive to mourn her loss. They came to Iowa in 1846 and she has ever since lived on the same place where she died, excepting 6 years she spent in Nebraska with her children after the death of her husband which occurred December 27, 1879.

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

Isaac died young of Croup.

William was scalded to death by falling into a tub of hot water!

Henry was killed at Belmont, MO during the Civil War. He may have married a Barbara Longacre!

Eli was a farmer at West Point, Iowa.

Shirley Johnson of Pomeroy, WA shows 12 children for this marriage, Sarah's obituary states there were 10 children born to them. She has them with a Charles DOB Abt 1829 and a Ellen DOB June 10, 1849 which I do not presently carry. Shirley does not show a Susannah which I now carry so there is a little conflict and work need to be done on the children.

Denney, Azariah (b. 19 JAN 1800, d. 28 OCT 1875)
Note: Azariah is the 2nd GGF of Willian Denney, Vancouver, WA. William is responsible for the majority of data herein on Azariah's line.

Stanly White also contributed a great deal of material to help me update this line. Much of his data was obtained from Quaker Records.

Per Wiliam Denney, Azariah owned and operated an Inn at Westfield, Hamilton County, IN. William thinks that the Inn that he operated is now part of the Conner Prairie Museum/1830s Town that is owned by Earlham College. The Inn is now called the Golden Eagle Inn.

He moved to Preble County, Ohio About 1825 and then about 1839 went to Westfield, Hamilton County, Ohio.

The 1850 Hamilton County census conducted on Aug 15, 1850 finds the family as Azariah age 50, a farmer with $1200 in Property and born NC, wife (2nd) Lydia age 35 born Ohio, Sarah Hamlin age 16, Almira Hamlin age 14, Margaret Hamlin age 11, and John Hamlin age 7 (Children of Lydia's from first marriage, all born Ohio), and Rebecca Denney age 7 months born IN.

It appears he may have moved to Newburgh Township, Fillmore County, MN during the 1850s and then back to Hamilton County, IN during the 1860s as that he was appearing during the census taking. This may have occurred after the death of his wife Lydia in 1864.

The 1860 Fillmore County, Newburgh Township, MN census conducted on Jul 10, 1860 finds the family as Azariah age 60 a farmer with $3000 in real property and $300 in personal property, wife Lydia age 44, Lydia's children from first marriage Sarah Hamil age 26, Almira Hamlin age 24, Levi Hamlin age 22, Mary Ann Hamlin age 20, Hannah Hamlin age 18, and John Hamlin age 16. Notice that three additional Hamlin children have been picked up since the last census, it appears that Lydia's first husband attempted to raise some of the children and turned the chore over to Lydia, or he died! Azariah's children during this census was Rebecca age 10, Amanda J. age 8 born IN, Azariah N. age 5 born IN, Lydia E. age 3 born IN, and Juliette age 1 born MN.

The 1870 Hamilton County, IN census conducted on Aug 19, 1870 finds the family as Azariah age 70, a farmer, wife Rachel age 38 born NC, daughter Lydia E. age 13 born IN, and daughter Juliette age 12 born MN

His second wife Lydia was laid to rest at Hesper, Winneshiek County, IA

His third wife Rachel was laid to rest at the Friends Cemetery, Noble Township, Wabash County, IN

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

Son Azariah was laid to rest at Hesper, Winneshiek County, IA

Daughter Lydia was laid to rest at the Friends Cemetery, Noble Township, Wabash County, IN

Azariah's grandson Nathan Denney married Ann Elizabeth Jeffrey, a daughter of Sarah Jenkins Jeffrey by her first marriage, Sarah married Azariah's son Joel!

Denney, William (b. 5 DEC 1803, d. ABT 1860)
Note: William was disowned by the Elk Monthly Meeting (Preble County, Ohio) on 7 June, 1828. No reason was given for the action.

He was received in membership at the Sugar River Monthly Meeting (Montgomery County, IN; 5 miles northeast of Crawfordsville, IN) on 1 October, 1831 with the consent of the Elk Monthly Meeting. The Sugar River meeting accepted him in their minutes on 15 October, 1831.

William does not appear in the 1840 census for Montgomery County, IN (no Denneys were listed). Per the memoirs of Jehu Ellis by Elizabeth Lawrence (his daughter), William and wife Beulah had three children and left Tippecanoe County, IN for Iowa in 1840.

Beulah was born in TN, moved to Clinton County, Ohio and then to Tippecanoe County, IN about 1825. The Tippecanoe Historical Library has an extensive file on the history of the Ellis families which was donated by family members.

On October 16, 1842, minor Denney children of William and Beulah granted a certificate to Pleasant Plain MM, Iowa.

On September 16, 1848, William Denney is disowned at Pleasant Plain MM, Iowa.

There is a William Denney that died at age77y 1m 27d on Oct 17, 1877 and is buried at the Van Horn Cemetery, Cedar County, Iowa. He had a wife Fidesta, wonder if it could be our William!

Denney, William (b. BEF 1749, d. BEF 14 FEB 1822)
Note: He/She would be one of the children of Samuel Denny/Sarah Suddarth (Southard) of Surry County, NC. The known siblings of this person that had families and of which I have prepared GEDCOMS at various Web Sites are Azariah Denny/Sally Wise Felton, William Denny/Rebecca Hooper, John Denny/Elizabeth UNK, Charles Denny/Anna Larwood, James Denny/Esther Small, Elizabeth Denny/Priddy Meeks, Keziah Denney/John Robinson.

This William Denney line has been greatly enhanced by nearly 4000 people in 2007, primarily based upon the book "William Denney Descendants" By Frances Marie Thomas Graves (Published ca 1983-1985) and further augmented by data extracted from Rootsweb reports published by Ann Jobe Brown, Kathy Nicholson, Don Miller, and Peggy Seidler. It is recognized that the material in this book has obvious errors and probably numerous other non obvious errors. This is the nature of genealogy data collecting, all books, reports, documents, etc on genealogy data that I have encountered, all contain many errors, they are written and transcribed by humans and humans make many mistakes and errors in judgement. My intention is to post what I find and attempt to point out as many possible errors as I see them so that others that encounter the data may make contact and provide better more accurate info. I feel it is better to use what data we have to further enhance the family lines (errors or not) rather then not use the data and fail to expose the material so that the corrections may be made and further expansion of family lines. There is MORE good material in these books & reports then bad!

William married Rebecca in Albemarle County, VA and moved to & settled at Surry County, NC about 1773 on the Ararat River, near Ceder Hill Church. As of 1946, the land was still in possession of a member of his family.

They supposedly had 10 children but only 8 are identified.

He settled on an AX Entry before the Land Offices opened.

William was the grantee under two grants of land from the State of North Carolina dated 1793 & 1797 on or near the Ararat River and adjoining his other lands.

William & his wife remained in Surry County when the others were moving westward & they both died & were buried on the farm where they lived. One of his sons remained in Surry County.

Near the entrance to the Azariah Denny Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, Surry County, NC, there is a stone inscribed " In Memory Of William and Rebecca Hooper Denny, Parents Of Azariah Denny, believed to Be Resting In Unmarked Graves Here"

HISTORICAL DATA ON WILLIAM

William Denny Book C Page 225 Surry County, NC from the state of North Carolina, on the east side of the Ararat River 100acres, November 3, 1784. This is the same day that grants were made to his brothers Azariah and Charles.

Surry County tax list for 1784,1785,1786, & 1789; Capt Lovel, 100 acres, 1 white poll, 0 black poll.

May term 1789, WM. Denny & Azeriah Denny on jury of 12 to lay out a road from Hallow Road near Lovills to the Iron Works (Note that Capt Lovel and Lovills are similar).

February. 1790 Term, WM Denny and Isaac Southard appointed jurors (sic) for the next Surry County Court of Pleas & Quarter Session. (Note that a Southard appears here, Southard was Williams mothers maiden name).

August, 1791 Surry County Court Minutes: County to pay claim to James Bayson for holding an interest(?) over Rebeccah Denny which we consider is a state charge. ( This is probably Williams wife).

William Denny is listed on the 1819 Surry County tax list in Capt Gregery's District with 175 acres of land assessed at $350. He was living next to a Mr. Hanis on the Ararat River and had on white poll.

A February 14, 1822 Surry County Deed states that "Rebeccah Denny, widow of Wm. Denny, Azariah Denni from Rebeccah Denni and others. This indenture made this 14th day of Feb in the year of our Lord 1822 between Rebeccah Denny, widow of William Denny decd (deceased) of State of NC and County of Surry and Nathan Holt and Martha his wife, Lazarus Denny and Kiziah Denny heirs in the estate of said William Denny decd of the one part and Azariah Denney, son of the said decd & the County and State aforesaid of the other part witnesses that the said widow Rebeccah Denny and the above named heirs as Legatees Jointly and ....". This shows that William and Rebeccah Denny most likely had surviving children Azariah Denney, Martha (Denny) Holt, Nancy (Denny) Burcham, Sally (Denny) Key, Lazarus Denney and Keziah Denney in 1822.

This is a sampling of data collected (By William Denney, their 4th great-great grandson) on the trails of William Denny. There is more of this type data in the possession of William Denney.

Denney, Shubal (b. 8 JAN 1810, d. 8 MAY 1886)
Note: His wife's DOB is supported by the 1850 Henry County, IN census.

Shubal is buried at the Greensboro Cemetery, Henry County, IN

His wife Doritha is buried at the Cadiz Cemetery, south of Cadiz on Road 100s, Cadiz, IN.

His wife Maragaret is buried in the Flat Rock Cemetery, Henry County, IN.

Per the book "History of Henry County" 1884, Shubal arrived in Henry County, IN in 1849, locating at Flat Rock, Liberty Township, where they lived until his wife, Margaret died. Shubal then moved to Greensboro Township, where he was still living in 1884.

On March 28, 1831 in Preble County, Ohio, the Court appointed Shubal Denney as the guardian of the minor Mendenhall children, Elijah age 14, Hannah age 12, Mary age 10, Eliza Ann age 8, and Isaac Mendenhall age 5. They were heirs of John Mendenhall, deceased, stepchildren of Shubal and were born by Shubal's wife Margaret

During the 1830 Preble County, Ohio census, Shubal was living five houses away from his father Lazarus Denney in Gratis Township.

Shubal was still living in Henry County, Liberty Township, Indiana during the 1850 census and he was still married to Margaret at that time. His name was shown as Shabiel at that time. He was evidently living next door to Dorothy (Jenkins) Hough and her two children, Ira and Irilla. Dorothy was to become Shubal's 2nd wife in about a year!

He was living in Henry County, IN on Nov 25, 1852 when he married the widow Dorithia Huff at the Flat Rock MM.

On March, 1831, Elisha Stubs and James Mendenhall, adms. of John Mendenhall, dec'd. vs. widow and heirs. Petition to sell land. Filed 6-7-1830, land, 90 acres of north side of the NE 1/4, Sec. 34, Twp. 4, Range 3. Widow Margaret, now wife of Shubal Denney. Heirs: Elijah, Hannah, Mary, Eliza Ann, and Isaac Mendenhall, all minors.

There are a large number of Denneys living in the New Castle, IN area, as a future project, I or some future researchers should explore and open up this area some more!

Denney, Jordan (b. 3 FEB 1812, d. 18 NOV 1881)
Note: Jordon lived at home with his parents during the 1830 Preble County, Ohio census.

He was disowned by the Elk Monthly Meeting on Nov 5, 1831, no reason given.

During the 1840 census, Jordon and his family were living in Hendricks County, IN.

During the 1850 Hendricks County, IN census, he was living in Marion Township and shown as being a carpenter. He owned $2750 worth of real estate. There were three males living with them, Abner Taylor age 24. Lewis Hunter age 23 and Michael Riley age 32. Hunter and Taylor were were farmers and born in NC while Riley was born in Ireland and was a merchant.

During the 1860 Hendricks County, Marion Township, IN census, he was still a carpenter.

In 1870, they were still living in Hendricks County, Marion Township, IN. Jordon is now shown as a farmer. Jordon age 57 born VA, Elizabeth age 56 born NC, Mary age 22 born IN, William Robin age 90 born NC, John Denney age 26 born IN, Mary C. age 21 born IN, Lola age 4 born IN and Lorena age one month born IN. Based on this census, we are assuming that Elizabeth's maiden name was Robin and William Robin was her father living with them. Also, based on this census, we are building a family for John Denney assuming that Mary C. was his wife and children Lola and Lorena were theirs.

Per Carol Barton he died at age 69y 9m 30 and was laid to rest at the Robbins Cemetery (On the Maynard Noland Farm), Marion Township, Hendricks County, IN

William Denney and 1870 census reports gives his wife's surname as ROBIN, Carol Barton has it as ROBBINS

His wife's year of birth would be 1811 based upon death date and age (74) at death, it would be 1814 based upon 1870 census

Carol Barton contacted me on the Internet and offered to provide data to further enhance the Jordan Denney line. William Denney had the line started based upon Quaker records, Carol as a descendant of Jordan was able to bring it up to date with more pertinent data. My thanks to Carol for her input on this line

Denney, Reuben (b. 24 APR 1818, d. 10 MAR 1864)
Note: William Denney of Vancouver, WA established the trails of Reuben Denney the same as he did with the rest of his direct line, through the Quaker Monthly Meeting records. This is a fantastic way of trailing your ancestors if they were quakers as they kept very accurate records.

Reuben was granted a certificate from the Elk MM in Preble County, Ohio to the Salem MM in Henry County, Iowa on June 15, 1839. On August 31, 1839, he was received into the Salem MM.

In the 1840 Henry County, IA census, Reuben was listed as single, 20-30 years of age and working in agriculture. Living nearby was Nathan Cook (his brother-in-law) with Sarah (Denney) Cook, his sister.

On December 26, 1840 Reuben and Hannah Frazier first declared their intention to marry; a second declaration was made on Jan 30, 1841 and they were reported married on Feb 27, 1841.

Reuben's farm was patented to him on April 10, 1849 in Appanoose County, Iowa per Linda Jacobs Green. Descendants were still residing on it in 1994.

In the 1850 census , Reuben, his second wife Nancy, and family were living in Taylor Township, Appanoose County, Iowa. It appears that his wife's brother Thomas Tucker was living next door and his wife's mother Francis Tucker and two Hiatts (Lorna and John L.) who appear to be Nancy's children from her first marriage, were living with them.

Reuben and his family were living in Appanoose County, Iowa during the 1860 census.

Theda Denney Zimmerman found Reuben Denney's burial location at the Denney Cemetery in Appanoose County, Iowa. His wife Nancy was also there.

DATA PERTAINING TO HIS SECOND WIFE

He also married Nancy Benion TUCKER on 22 Dec 1846 in Henry Count
Reuben was disowned for marrying out of unity on 24 July, 1847 per "The William Wade Hinshaw Iowa Quaker Meeting Records--Volume VII"; Salem MM; 1838-1919. Nancy Benion TUCKER was born about 1818 in NC.
Nancy was disowned (as Mrs. Nancy Hiatt) on 23 March, 1847 at Salem MM, Henry County, Iowa.

What appears to be her mother Frances Tucker was living with Reuben Denney and his wife Nancy in the 1850 & 1860 Appanoose Co., Iowa censuses.

In the 1870 Appanoose County, Iowa census, Nancy was living with her son, John Hiatt and had her daughter Sarah Denney living with them also. She apparently owned the farm that her son, John Hiatt was renting (per the 1870 census), since she was shown with $290 of real estate.

NOTES ON REUBEN'S LIFE FROM WILLIAM DENNEY

Reuben was granted a certificate from the Elk Monthly Meeting in Preble County, OH to the Salem Monthly Meeting in Henry County, Iowa on 15 June, 1839. On 31 Aug. 1839, he was received into the Salem MM.

Reuben was single and listed as follows in the 1840 Henry County, Iowa
census: One male 20-30; employed in agriculture. Living nearby were Nathan Cook, Reuben's brother-in-law and Sarah (Denney) Cook, his sister.

On 28 May, 1840, Reuben purchased Lot 6, Block 19 and the N 1/2 of Lots 7 & 8, Block 24 in Salem, Henry County, Iowa from Street & Bayer (Book B, p. 94).

On 26 Dec., 1840, Reuben and Hannah first declared their intention to marry; a second declaration was made on 30 Jan 1841; and they were reported married on 27 Feb 1841.

On 1 Apr., 1842, Reuben purchased land in the SW 1/4, SW 1/4, Sec. 30, T70, R6 (Henry County, Iowa, Book C, p. 392).

On 19 Jan., 1844, Reuben purchased land in Henry County, Iowa from Fred Enderley--the east end of the SE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 13, T71, R1? (Book D, p. 356).

Reuben sold the east end of the SE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 31, T70, R6 to Henry Bales on 7 Sept., 1844 in Henry County, Iowa (Book D, p. 356).

Reuben's farm was patented to him on 10 April, 1849 in Appanoose County, Iowa, per Linda Jacobs Green and descendants were still residing on it in 1994.

Reuben and his wife sold Eli Jessop Lot 6 of Block 19 in Salem, Henry
County, Iowa on 5 Sept., 1849 (Book H, p. 522); perhaps as he was getting ready to move to Appanoose County, Iowa.

In the 1850 census (9 Dec., 1850), Reuben, his wife Nancy, and family were living in Appanoose Co., Iowa (Taylor Twp.). It appears that his wife's brother Thomas Tucker was living next door and his wife's father Francis Tucker and two Hiatts (Lorna and John L.) who appear to be Nancy's children by her first husband, were living with them. Several other Hiatts and Tuckers lived nearby.

Reuben and his family were living in Appanoose County, Iowa (Douglas Twp.) as of the 1860 census (June 28, 1860), p. 604; HH #403. It appears that his new wife's brother, John Tucker was living next door at the time. Also a John Hiatt (18; b NC) and Francis Tucker (83; b MD) were living with them.

He married Hannah FRAZIER on 27 Feb 1841 in Salem MM, Henry County, IA .
Hannah FRAZIER [S5] was born on 8 Oct 1823 in Randolph County, IN
Died between 1842/1846 in Henry County, IA. Her husband Reuben had remarried by this date; I assume Hannah had died before then. She perhaps died in childbirth with her first child and thus about 1842.

ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN

Isaac died in the county home, he left no near relatives at the time of his death. He is buried in the Salem South Cemetery, Salem, Iowa. His tombstones does not show a first name, initials of I.J. only. He appears to be living with his grandparents Thomas Frazier and Hannah Hockett during the 1860 census, this leads one to believe that his mother may have died during his birth.

Denney, Keziah (b. 8 DEC 1820, d. 25 JUN 1861)
Note: Keziah and her husband Reuben were living in Homers? Township, Preble County, Ohio during the 1840 census, they had no children at this time.

In 1850, they were recorded on page #252 of Tippecanoe Township, Henry County, Iowa. Reuben was shown as LEUBEN, he was a farmer with $850 of real estate.

The 1860 Henry County, IA census finds Keziah as head of the household and living next door to her nephew William Denney, son of Azariah Denney.

Keziah and her husband Reuben are buried at the Salem Cemetery, Salem, Henry County, Iowa.

I have a family report that carries the LAMM line on out but the person that furnished the report is adamant that no living people be put on the internet, thus I will not post here to prevent that from happening by me at least!

From "History of History Co., Iowa", Volume I, Copyright 1982, Page 270:

LAMM, ALBERT

Reuben and Kessiah Denny Lamm came to Iowa from Ohio. Reuben was a
farmer and settled near Denova, Iowa. To this union eleven children were
born.
Albert Lamm, tenth child of Reuben and Kessiah, was born near Denova,
Iowa September 29, 1854. He was left an orphan at the age of seven. He
lived near Denova and Salem all his life. He began the mercantile business
as a huckster from a little home near the Maple Grove school house. The
business increased, and a store building was built along with a blacksmith
shop. The post office was taken over and Denova became a reality. His
kindly disposition, love for people and hard work made him a success. He
was a birth right member of the Friends church. On March 6, 1872 he married
Martha Frazer. To this union four children were born. Leroy the eldest
died at the age of three. Leota and twins Harvey and Iola. Shortly after
moving to Salem where he started his second store, his wife Martha died.
December 12, 1907 he married Hanna Davis and they lived in Salem and were
active in the church and social life of the community. During the last few
years of his life his health failed. They were planning to return to Denova
to a modern country home which was almost completed but he died very
suddenly on February 18, 1924.
Leota married Clark Hallowell and to this union one daughter, Vesta was
born. For many years they ran a hardware store in Salem.
Iola never married. Alson Harvey married Mary Belle Elliott, daughter
of Nathan and Jane Elliott. They ran the store in Denova and continued the
huckster business. They had eleven children, eight boys and three girls.
Nathan (Bert) married Mabel Wheeler. Rex (Sox) married Lois Barton. Two
sons, Dean and Keith. Harold married Ethel Stevens. Two children, Miriam
and Steven. Delbert (Bill) married Louise Rauscher. Three sons, Delbert,
Donald and Robert. Thoe married Maurice Wilson. One son, Markham. Walter
(Perky) married Irene White. One daughter, Gloria. Robert (Pinky) married
Odetta Aufranc. George married Daryl Connor. Five daughters, Caryl, Cathy,
Connie, Christy and Cindy. Ruth married Raymond Hester. Ralph married
Darlene Seabranch. Two sons, Dennis and Kent. Estyl married Dale Maust.
Two daughters, Theolene and Marlene.
In later years the Harvey Lamm family moved to Mt. Pleasant where the
Lamm boys were active in sports. And several had their own business.
Many descendants of Albert Lamm still live in Henry County.

Haines, Lydia (b. 5 APR 1816, d. 24 OCT 1864)
Note: FROM ELIZABETH WHELAN

Her first husband, John Hamlin Jr. - Son of John D Hamlin - was injured in a threshing accident which crushed his legs and lower spine. He died Nov 30, 1842 in Marlborough Twp, Stark County, Ohio. I have the article on said accident on file, as well as 50 pages of intestate estate records. The estate did not settle until 1847 and was quite a mess. Lydia moved to Hamilton, Washington County, Indiana where her father & stepmother resided. Land records for Stark County Ohio recorded the sale of the land she retained after her husbands death. The sale is dated 11 Nov 1846. The affidavit at the time of the sale came from Hamilton County, Indiana. She most likely met Azariah somewhere between Ohio and her destination in Indiana - most likely in Indiana.

Text of newspaper notice as follows:
Ohio Repository, Thursday, Dec 18, 1842 - Page 3, Col 1
Melancholy Accident.-We regret to learn that a few weeks since, John Hamlin, a respectable citizen of Marlborough township, whilst engaged in threshing with a machine, was caught in it - had his back and both legs broken. He lingered in the greatest agony 9 days, and died on the 30th ult. He has left a wife and 5 or 6 children to mourn his loss. - This is another evidence of the care necessary in using this machine.
