Key, Martha Ellen (b. 27 JAN 1882, d. 19 AUG 1957)
Note: Her death certificates shows her year of birth as 1872

Martha Ellen Key Denny
Martha would wake up first and build a big fire in the downstairs kitchen on cold winter days. The children in the upstairs bedrooms would grab their clothes and run downstairs to dress near the warm fire on cold days. Martha was an excellent cook and always had lots of cream and butter in which to cook. The cream and butter was kept in a "spring well" to keep it cool in the summers. She had to do a lot of cooking with her large family and with the many multifamily get-togethers organized between farmers when crops like wheat, corn and sugar cane were harvested.
Because of Leonard often making and using the newest technology available Martha had a number of appliances others were not able to have in Pilot Mountain. For example, she had a separate wash house that was built only to do laundry. This wash house had a huge tank that existed just to catch rain and dispatch water for the cleaning of garments.
Martha was an expert at crochet and she made beautiful bedspreads, table runners and doilies. She made and wore lots of pretty bonnets and aprons all made from different colored feed sacks. Martha believed in lots of hard work and was not nearly as playful as Leonard with their many grandchildren.

Obituary for Martha Ellen Key Denny from newspaper cut out by Audrey Gordon. Not sure which newspaper but article was on August 20th, 1957 (Lexington, Pilot Mountain or Winston Salem):

She was the mother-in-law of Rep. Ralph J. Scott of the Fifth District. He left Washington by plane tonight to attend the service. He will return to Washington by plane Wednesday morning.
Mrs. Denny is survived by her husband; four daughters, Mrs. Ralph J. Scott of Danbury, Mrs. Audrey Gordon of Lexington, Mrs. Robert Ranier of Skokie, Ill., and Mrs. Polly Walker of Pilot Mountain, Route 1; four sons, Ira K. Denny of Winston-Salem, Garland, Phil and Reid Denny of Pilot Mountain, Route 1; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Charlie Badgett of Mount Airy, Route 4; and two brothers, Robert Key of Ronda and Oliver Key of Ararat.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pilot Mountain Presbyterian Church. The body will lie in state one hour. The Rev. Gerald Reiff, the Rev Gilmer Denny and the Rev. Paul Key will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Fred Denny, Claude Key, Junior Key, Burton Venable, Roger Badgett and Reid Marsh.

Denney, Ira King (b. 10 SEP 1901, d. 3 JAN 1996)
Note: His last residence was in Nashville, TN

Ira King Denny
Ira loved to invent machines. His basement was full of machines that he built. He used them in trying to invent even more machines. He tried very hard to conquer perpetual motion and many of his machines made evolutionary advances towards this aim. As we all know....he never quite conquered it! He went to Atlanta to go to mechanical school during the 1920s. He worked as a mechanic there for several years. He then got a job at Holsum Bakeries in Winston Salem during the depression where he kept all the machines and trucks running. Over the years he revised many of the machines at Holsum so they would perform better. He was a very distinguished employee and he eventually retired from Holsum after they paid him for many, many years doing what he loved best - tinkering and inventing machines!
