PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Scott Denny, 91, of Pilot Mountain, widow of Curtis Holmer Denny, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Village Care Nursing Center in King. She was born in Guilford County on May 24, 1918, to the late Worth B. Scott and Mecie Stanley Scott Hall. Mrs. Denny was a member of Whitaker Chapel United Methodist Church for 50 years. She retired from the Surry County Schools after 30 years. Surviving are her two sons and daughters-in-law, Billie and Jean Denny of Davis, Okla., and Wayne and Carol Denny of Pilot Mountain; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Joe Davis of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren and spouses, Curtis and Kristin Denny of Prosser, Wash., Shanna and Kevin Thomas of Euless, Texas, Rick and Wendy Penn of Sherrills Ford and Brooks and Stacey Penn of Cary; eight great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Lisa and husband, Warren Bailey of Winston-Salem. Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents are one daughter, Donna Lynn Denny; and two brothers, Dewey Scott and Rex Hall. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2009, at Whitaker Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Raiford and the Rev. Arthur Livengood officiating with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Whitaker Chapel United Methodist Church in the fellowship hall after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Whitaker Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, J.W. Denny, 257 Burge Road, Pinnacle, NC 27043. Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain is assisting the Denny family.

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mary Lola Venable Denny, 87, died Friday, May 23, 2008. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cox-Needham Chapel.

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mary Lola Venable Denny, 87, of Pilot Mountain, went to be with the Lord on May 23, 2008, at Twelve Oaks Nursing Home in Mount Airy. She was born in Surry County on Dec. 8, 1920, to the late Sherman and Sarah Lou Keaton Venable. She was retired from Renfro Hosiery. Mrs. Denny is survived by her husband Connie Allen Denny of 68 years; two daughters Glenda Combs of Pilot Mountain and Judy Terrell of Mount Airy, One son Joe Denny of Pinnacle; four sisters, Faye Stanley of Dobson, Bertha Venable of Mount Airy, Alma Lou Vernon of Dobson, Carol Flippen of Siloam, one brother Roby Venable of Mount Airy, a half brother, Garrnett Venable of Mount Airy, a half sister, Rita Atkins of Mount Airy, Eight Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren and seven Great Great Grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers, Floyd Venable and Weldon Venable; a sister, Ollie Quesinberry; a grandson, Dwayne; a half brother Troy Venable. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Monday, May 26, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Cox Needham Chapel with the Rev. Wesley H. Boyles, the Rev. Ted Turman and the Rev. Marion Fulk conducting the service with interment to follow at Black Water United Methodist Cemetery. Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain is assisting the Denny family.

MOUNT AIRY — Miss Bertha Ann Venable, 98, of 2067 Siloam Road, Mount Airy, passed away Monday, June 1, 2009, at Central Continuing Care. Miss Venable was born May 4, 1911, in Surry County, daughter of the late Sherman Roscoe and Sarah Lou Keaton Venable. She retired from Spencer’s Inc. after 32 years of service and was a member of Blackwater United Methodist Church. She is survived by three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Faye and Jim Stanley and Alma Lou Vernon, all of Dobson, and Carol Lee and Taylor Flippin of Siloam; a brother and sister-in-law, Roby and Earnestine Venable of Mount Airy; a half sister and her husband, Rita and Lonnie Atkins of Mount Airy; a half brother, Garnett Venable of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Miss Venable was preceded in death by two sisters, Ollie Mae Quesinberry and Lola Denny; two brothers, Weldon Venable and Floyd Venable; and a half brother, Troy Venable. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Blackwater United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ted Turman and the Rev. Marion Fulk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Blackwater United Methodist Church. The family may also be contacted at Mrs. Venable’s home, 2067 Siloam Road, Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Ned tells me that at one time his wife's parents had temporarily lived in the old Denny Schoolhouse located where Nell Denny lives.
