Key, Gabriel Osborn "DOCK" (b. 14 MAY 1853, d. 22 NOV 1933)

Note: Gabriel and Elizabeth moved to Pilot Mountain, NC around 1890, where he built a home and purchased land surrounding the town.

Gabriel was a Primitive Baptist Minister and performed many of the Denny/Key marriage ceremonies. In 1896 he aided in the formation of the Pilot Mountain Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as Pastor until his death.

In the fall of 1933, he was traveling to Carthage, NC on business, he was going to complete a transaction on buying a farm from Lester Hall. Upon his return to Pilot Mountain, he developed a cold which later turned to pneumonia of which he died.

Gabriel and his wife are buried at the City Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, NC.

He built a tobacco warehouse, which he operated and sold fertilizer from as well. Later, Gabriel and a cousin (Denny!) formed Key and Denny Tobacco Company, which made plug chewing tobacco (two brands were "HONEST FRANK" and "LITTLE ETTA" named after two of his children.

Later, through his tobacco business Gabriel met Mr. R. J. Reynolds, who owned a small tobacco company in Winston bearing his name. Mr. Reynolds tried to purchase Key & Denny Tobacco Company, offering Gabriel the opportunity to buy his company and work with him. However, Gabriel was happy in Pilot Mountain, and did not want to move to a city as large as Winston, so he turned down Mr. Reynolds offer.
