Denney, John Willis (b. 27 OCT 1887, d. 18 FEB 1976)
Note: They are buried at the Whitakers Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, Pilot Mountain, Surry County, NC. There are markers there for three infant sons with DOB which I presume is also their death dates.

John was born at the Joel Denny home place. He was educated at the old Denny Schoolhouse which to this date (2000) remains in the hands of his daughter Nell.

In 1915, he was able to buy the Giles Whitaker farm up the road from where he lived, consisting of over 100 acres, a large two story residence, a couple of smaller houses and the large oak tree under which "GRANDFATHER NEEDHAM" held his noted prayer meeting for rain many years prior.

John used to love to tell the story how when he was younger, he went up on the Pilot Mountain, to the right side of the Pinnacle and got the large rocks that made the front steps of his house and brought them back down by wagon.

Denney, Gilmer Carlin (b. 22 JAN 1911, d. 28 MAY 1997)
Note: Gilmer was a Baptist Minister. He was educated at the old Denny School on the David Jones Denny property. He attended high school but his education was stopped as he was needed on the farm to help his parents.

His wife Ruby was educated at the Pilot View School and graduated from Pilot Mountain High School. She was the salutatorian at the graduation.

Gilmer and Ruby started out as tenant farmers, later they moved in with Gilmer's parents to help out as age was beginning to take its toll. Eventually, they bought a farm on Tom's Creek Road of Surry County and moved into their own home.

Gilmer was reared as a Primitive Baptist and Ruby as a Methodist, after their marriage though, they attended Pinnacle View Missionary Church. After acting as a Sunday School Superintendent for a period of time, Gilmer received the call to preach. He was ordained as a Missionary Baptist Minister in Sep 1942. He combined his ministry and farming until 1955.

He served as pastor of the following churches: Sulpher Springs Oct 1943-Aug 1945, Jessups Grove Nov 1943-Feb 1954, Hills Grove Mar 1944-Aug 1946, Brims Grove Mar 1945-Sep 1957, Rock Hill Apr 1944-Jan 1951, Pinnacle May 1946-Oct 1951, Snow Hill Aug 1946-Jul 1949, Olive Grove Jan 1950-Jun 1953, Salem Fork Jan 1954-Sep 1973, Bethel Jul 1953-Oct 1955, Pinnacle View Apr 1956-1983.

He died of cancer and is buried along with his wife Ruby at the Pinnacle View Baptist Church Cemetery, Surry County, NC
