Denney, Audrey Orena (b. 18 JUN 1905, d. 19 SEP 2000)
Note: Audrey Orena Denny Gordon
Audrey, at 8 years old in 1913, had never been further than 5 miles away from her Pilot Mountain home on Old Mountain Road. One of her first cousins once removed, Jesse Ashburn, took her in a mule-pulled wagon to Winston Salem 25 miles away! This trip was a highlight in her young life and she worshipped her cousin, Jesse, for his willingness to take her on this great adventure. Her first child, Jessie Gordon, would be named after him.
Audrey was an avid reader from an early age and she wrote some short stories and poems. She attended teacher’s school after her high school graduation and taught school in a one room school house (Black Mountain School on Old Mountain Road) for grades first through seventh. She taught in the 1923-24 years and drove to school in a Model T Ford which often got stuck in the mud. Sometimes, in inclement weather, her father would take her in a mule-drawn surrey.
Audrey married Arthur Eugene "Gene" Gordon and they had four children. They would later move to Lexington, NC, where Gene would own and run the local Ford car dealership there (Gordon Motors). She parted ways with Gene and made a living by renting property she acquired. She worked very hard keeping things in order at multiple properties in Lexington and Danbury, NC. She could fix plumbing, hammer shingles, and fix a car problem in a single afternoon. She was a very independent woman and didn’t mind entertaining herself. She was a great mother and grandmother. Her children and their families were the center of her life.
