Note: William and Sarah owned and operated a farm in Eldora Township. Besides being a farmer, William had a country store and was a licensed minister in the Union Primitive Baptist Church. In those days, even as it is today, life on the farm meant daylight till dark working in the field during the crop harvesting season, and till the tobacco was all "tied" and packed in the "hogshed", carried to a railway station and shipped to market.
They were interested in the children getting an education, to this end, some of the children to include Gabriel, went to school at Dobson and boarded with a family there, because there were no schools close to them.
During the 1910's both of them lost their eyesight. Sarah had surgery in Greensboro, Guilford County, NC but it was not successful. Even after becoming blind, she could knit and continued to knit stockings and socks for some of the family. Sometime after her blindness set in, she thought she had picked up her medicine, instead it was a bottle of canning fluid. She swallowed some of this by mistake. These fluids were used to seal tin cans Knowing that the canning fluid could kill her if she were to sleep, friends would come in and help with the task of keeping her awake for the next 24 hours.
William and Sarah were double first cousins, there are many, many Denney-Key cousin marriages and this is another that will cause printed reports to go wacky. The "DOUBLE" being that Sarah's mother and father were brother and sister to her husband William's parents.
Daniel Jenkins has his DOB as April 29, 1840.
ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN
William and John were twins and evidently died at or near birth.
Mary and her husband John had two children, no details available.
Rosa moved to Moore County.

Note: Achillis enlisted in the Confederate Army with Lewis Jones Key and begin military service on Jun 5, 1861 at Mount Airy, Surry County, NC. He enlisted as a Private with Company H, 21st Regiment of the Confederate Army. Achillis and Lewis were among 18,000 foot soldiers taking part in Jackson's Campaign of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, they were hungry, exhausted, and footsore. At dawn on May 25, Jackson's troops attacked the Union Soldiers when many were killed and wounded, more then 3000 prisoners taken and 10,000 stands of much needed small arms, several cannons and a vast quantity of stores were captured by Jackson. Confederate casualties were 68 killed, 329 wounded, and 3 missing. Achillis was one of the wounded at the Jackson Campaign in VA. In June 1862, Achillis and Lewis deserted from the Confederate Army. Supposedly, more then 3064716214f Jackson's Troops deserted in 1863-1863, some were caught and executed, some drifted back to units and never punished and some went back home and never found by the troops. The official estimate on deserters was 100,000
Kenneth Key and Daniel Jenkins both have Achillis having eleven children with his third wife Sara Coe, this would have him starting this third family at about age 59 and having the last child at about age 70-72. Not impossible but am a little skeptical of this fact. I questioned Kenneth on this fact and he stated his records now show no children for Achillis' 3rd marriage. I have deleted the children (Roxa, Loyd, Eunice, Lydia, Bessie, Hattie, Royal, Hollis, Mary, Dora, and Lula).
Per the below Internet message, Achillis in fact did have those children so I am restoring them!
Hi There,
My name is Michael Eller and I wandered onto Ancestry.com in search of information on my Great Grandfather Achillis Shedrick Key.. I'm originally from Iowa where my Grandmother Eunice Key Eller passed away last Friday. She was 96.. I read the note where you mention deleting the children with the 3rd wife.. Don't do it.. They are legit.. After the funeral I took my three nieces outside of the town I grew up in, Lenox, Iowa, to show them the grave and cemetery where Achillis Key or A.S. Key was buried with wife Sara whom ironically lived to be 96 as Eunice did. There were some amazing pictures at the funeral.. I had absolutely no idea my Great Grandfather participated in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier!! This is exciting stuff.. Apparently Achillis fathered 20 children that we know of by three different women.. He fathered triplets at 73 years of age if I'm not mistaken.. There is an old story that goes that Achillis was so fertile that a cedar tree is growing from his grave.. It appears to be true too.. The original grave marker is not there and Sara original has been dislodged by the tree. There are two much newer stones to the left of the tree now. Enice's sister Mary was unable to get out of the car at the funeral so I took her a rose from the casket. It's amazing how long these Keys are living!! Anyway I'm just getting started with this genealogy stuff.. I'm going to be asking around for more information soon.. I'm glad I found Ancestry.com and your descriptive reports.. Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll try to find out for you..

Thanks
Michael
Sandy Carter Duff has also contacted me on the Internet, she descends from Achillis and his second wife Mary Grubb. She has provided me a great report to further enhance my data and she would like to make contact with more cousins. Her present E-Mail is sandy@@carduff.com , E-Mail addresses change quite frequently, thus if anyone tries to contact her there and fails, check with me to see if I have an updated address. My thanks to Sandy for her great data and interest in preserving the family history
Below are notes from Sandy's data on Achillis
Notes for ACHELUS SHEDRICK KEY:
The following description of A.S. Key's Civil War experience is taken
directly from Irene Padgett's book, [UL:KEY IS MY NAME.:UL] [IT:On
June 5, 1861 at Mt. Airy, Lewis J. Key age 17 enlisted as a private in
Company H, the 21st regiment of the Confederate Army along with his 19
year old brother, Archilas S. Key. They were sent to Danville,
Virginia. Archilas was wounded in the back at Winchester, Virginia on
May 25, 1862. Both boys deserted in June 1862 and were unaccounted
for by the army thereafter (Manarin, 1977). Prior to the desertion,
Lewis and Archilas were among 18,000 foot soldiers taking part in
Jackson's Campaign of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The soldiers
were hungry, exhausted, and footsore, At dawn on May 25, Jackson's
troops attached the Union soldiers and drove them back across the
Potomac. About 1,500 Union soldiers were killed or wounded, more than
3,000 prisoners were taken, 10,000 stands of much needed small arms,
several cannon and a vast quantity of stores were captured by Jackson.
Confederate casualties were 68 killed, 329 wounded, and 3 missing
(Dupuy, 1960). Apparently, Archilas was one of the wounded.:IT] The
National Archives has A.S. Key's Confederate Muster Roll Records which
highlight a brief career as a Confederate soldier. Archilas Key
enlisted 5 June 1861 as a private in Company H, 11 Regiment North
Carolina Infantry (Volunteers) at Dobson for 12 months by James R
Waugh. During the period 5 June to 1 September he was present, but
sick in camp. Between 1 September to 31 October he was absent - at
sick camp and last paid by Capt. Ambler on September 1861. On 14
November, 1861, the 11th became the 21 Regiment North Carolina
Infantry (State Troops). Again on 27 May 1862 A. S. appears on a
register of sick and wounded at C.S.A. Hospital, Winchester, Virginia.
His last pay date was 1 March 1862. He is reported 'absent without
leave i.e., deserting June 1862. His pension records were also
requested, but the National Archives reported that pension and bounty
land records were not found. Six months after his desertion, Archilas
married Ellen Whitaker. The next public record of A.S. Key is his
marriage to Mary Grubb in Jasper County, Indiana in 1868. In 1870,
the family has already moved to Peoria County, Illinois where A.S. is
a farmer near Radnor with only personal property valued at $300. Mary
has parents, brothers, and sisters living in Jasper County, IN and
later Peoria County, IL, and still later in Taylor County, Iowa. It
is hard to know who was the leader of the family's moves West - A.S.
and Mary or others. By 1880, the family is in Grove Township, Taylor
County, Iowa. In the 1923 Taylor County Atlas, A.S. owns 40 acres of
land in Section 35 and reported living in the county 38 years.
What is the proper spelling for A.S. Key's first and middle name?
In her book on the Key family history, Irene Padgett presents his
name as Achilles Sherdrick KEY. His death certificate, with
information provided by wife Sarah, reads Achelus S. Key.
Family Notes copied by granddaughter Helen V Smith provide more on
the life of A.S. [IT:A.S. KEY is buried at Blue Grove Cemetery,
Sharpsburg, Iowa. Mary GRUBB Key, his second wife, is buried on one
side of him, and Sarah COE Key, his third wife on the other. We think
Mary WHITTAKER (A.S. first wife) is buried in Indiana. A.S. and Mary
left North Carolina because their families could not help feed them
after the Civil War. A.S. worked for Mary Whittaker's father. He
couldn't pay him. A.S. picked up Sam, his infant son, took Mary by
the hand and left North Carolina for Indiana, (in a covered wagon).
Mary Whittaker was pregnant with Lewis and died at his birth or
shortly after. Later A.S. married Mary GRUBB. She raised Sam and
Lewis. They had no memory of Mary Whittaker. They considered Mary
GRUBB Key their mother. OBITUARY A.S. KEY From Helen V. Smith (1989)
Copied from a small notebook of Eunice Mae Key Eller, daughter of A.S.
and Sarah Key. A.S. KEY was born in 1842 in Surrey County, North
Carolina and died at home near Sharpsburg, Iowa June 13, 1930 at age
88 years, 4 months and 26 days. He married Ellen Whittaker in 1864,
and to this union was born two sons. (Samuel, Lewis) The oldest son
and the mother preceded Mr. Key in death. On November 1, 1968 he
married Mary Grubb, and seven children were born to this union. On the
22 of September 1901, he married Sarah Coe, to this union were born
eleven children, four of whom preceded him in death. With the death
of Mr. Key, another Confederate veteran of the Civil War has passed to
the great (beyond) from which there is no return. He united with the
Christian church 1894 and remained a member until his death. He is
survived by his wife Sarah Key, and thirteen children. The funeral
was held June 15, 1930, with Rev. Shaw conducting the service. The
pallbearers were the grandsons Roy, Russell, Frank, Elmer, Herman, and
Howard Key.:IT].

Notes for MARY GRUBB:
One wonders why Mary was in this household in 1860. Is it because her
parents wanted to help out this young mother with 5 children to care
for? If so, who earned the money, Mary or her parents? Was it
because Mary's folks couldn't afford to keep her at home? John
Tillette was also born in Virginia. Was he a relative or friend of
the family?
Sandra Carter-Duff has a picture of Mary Grubb Key's gravestone.
In a June 30, 1975 letter to niece AnnElla Campbell Smith, Vera
Campbell Hutchison reflected that an Uncle Grant Grubb came to Adams
to find work. Grant became pals with J.W. Campbell and told J.W. of
his niece Eliza back in Iowa. J.W. and Eliza exchanged letters until
finally there was a meeting. Soon thereafter they married. This
recollection provided the clue that led to the discovery of Mary's
parentage i.e., by tracing siblings including Grant Grubb. First,
research was done on a James H. Grubb and his wife, buried in Bedford,
Taylor County, Iowa nearby Mary's long time Iowa home. James and
Harriet were also married in Jasper County, Indiana, just two years
before Mary Grubb and A. S. Key. James is about 6 years older than
Mary and seemed to be a probable older brother. The researcher noticed
that a Grant Grubb was buried in the Adams, Nebraska cemetery. His
obituary was found, then his death certificate. The latter gave the
same parents as James H. Grubb. While other Grubb families lived in
Taylor and Ringgold counties around the same time that the Key's were
there, only James seems to have been related. OBITUARY: Mary GRUBB
KEY. Bedford (Iowa) Free Press 28 Feb 1901. Mrs. Mary GRUBB KEY was
born in Jefferson County, Virginia 19 November 1846. She died 19 Feb
1901 at her home in Taylor County, age 54 years 3 months. She moved
with her parents to Ohio in 1850, from there to Jasper County, Indiana
in 1852. She married A.S. KEY 1 Nov 1868. They moved to Peoria
County, Illinois in Feb 1869 and from there to Taylor County, Iowa in
the spring of 1880, where she lived until her decease. She united with
the Christian Church in 1866 and lived a faithful, consistent
Christian life. She leaves a husband, 3 sons, 2 daughters and 2
step-sons to mourn the loss of a faithful and loving wife and tender
mother. The funeral services were conducted by the writer in the Blue
Grove Church on 21 Feb and remains were laid to rest in the Grove
Center Cemetery. The sympathy of the community is extended to the
sorrowing ones in their affliction but humanity stands almost dumb and
powerless to alleviate the sorrow and distress occasioned by such an
event as this. May they lean on the strong arm of our heavenly
father, who alone can give relief. - Victor F. Johnson

The marriage was performed by Benajah Johnson, Justice of the Peace.
Notes for SARAH ELLEN COE:
According to grand-daughter, Helen V. Eller Smith, Sarah was from
Surry County, North Carolina and lived with the Dock Key family when
A. S. Key visited to ask her to marry him. Sarah was picked out by
Mary GRUBB Key as the woman for A. S. to marry after the latter's
death, which was eminent at the time. A. S. corresponded with Sarah,
through Dock's daughter, as Sarah could not read or write.
