Key, Gabriel Jackson (b. 1 SEP 1881, d. 22 MAY 1952)
Note: Gabriel and his wife Emma would have been first cousins.

Gabriel and Emma were members of the Primitive Baptist faith, Gabriel served as deacon and clerk of the Union Church from 1921 until his death in 1952. He was ordained a deacon Aug 28, 1921. He was clerk of the Fisher River Primitive Baptist Association at the time of his death.

Gabriel and Emma are buried at the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Surry County, NC.

Daniel Jenkins has a DOD of Sep 15, 1969 for his wife Emma.

Gabriel's early childhood was typical of other boys in that period of time. He helped with "chores" around the house, and as soon as he was old enough he began working with his father in the general store. During Gabriel's late teens, he became a partner in that business which was renamed W. J. Key & Son. This business was located in Ararat, Surry County, NC. Gabriel's formal schooling was in the early 1900's at the Oak Ridge Military Academy, near Kernersvile, NC and a boarding school at Dobson, NC. Gabriel had a good understanding of math. A salesman came to the store one day that was selling adding machines. The salesman and Gabriel added a long problem of three digit numbers. Gabriel got the answer before the salesman that was using the adding machine. Need I say that there was no sale that day for the salesman! However, later, Gabriel did buy a cash register. After Gabriel and Emma were married, they began their lives together in a rented house in Ararat, near the family business, but soon after their 2nd year of marriage, they bought a house of their own. Being merchants made Gabriel and Emma well known in Ararat and surrounding communities. They carried a full line of stock which included staple foods, dress goods, feed, seed, and fertilizer and farm tools. Gabriel and Emma were members of the Primitive Baptist faith, Gabriel served as a deacon and clerk of the Union Church from 1921 until his death in 1952. He was also the clerk of the Fisher River Primitive Baptist Association at the time of his death. Times were hard in the 1910's and 1920's, but they made provisions for all ten children to graduate from high school. Eight of the children received technical or vocational training or college education. The family house burned down on January 22, 1926, later, Gabriel built another house at Ararat which was still standing in 1996. Emma did not have any formal nurses training but she became well known in the community for her home remedy cures. Often she assisted Doctor Jim Smith from Pilot Mountain as a midwife.

Gabriel opened his own general store in Ararat, NC. This building was divided into four separate stores, one for farm machinery, one for dry goods, one for men and women clothing, and one for staple items such as flour and sugar. Gabriel also operated a tin shop where he made tobacco flues and stove pipes. They had a dog, German Shepard named Jack to serve as a store watch dog. One night, Gabriel saw a car stop and look at the store, Jack came running and the car drove away. However, the next day Jack disappeared and the store was broken into that following evening. Jack was found with a bullet hole floating in the Ararat River. Gabriel later attended a funeral and realized that the Deceased man was wearing one of the suits that was stolen

During the great depression of the 1930's, the bank foreclosed on Gabriel's store. He said sometime later that if they could have given him six months more, he would have been able to save the store. Not only did he lose the store, but his farms in Cameron and Red Spring, NC. Gabriel tried to help his neighbors through the hard times of the depression by giving them credit in the store, they were just beginning to pay back some of the money when the bank foreclosed. He continued his work in the tin shop. It was during this time that he also became Post Master of Ararat, a position he held until his death.
