Venable, Lucy Selena "LENA" (b. 3 NOV 1916, d. 22 APR 2004)

Mrs. Lucy Selena "Lena" Venable Key, widow of
Alton Jackson Key Sr., died Thursday, April 22,
2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Key was born
Nov. 3, 1916, in Surry County to Luther P. and
Rosa Lillian Venable. She retired as manager of
Scotties Drug Store in Sanford and had lived in
Winston-Salem since 1985. Mrs. Key was a member of
Beck's Baptist Church, and she loved her family,
her friends and her church. She was known for her
beautiful, handmade afghans and loved the Atlanta
Braves, crosswords and reading. Mrs. Key is
survived by a son, Alton Jackson Key Jr. and wife,
Eva, of Brevard; two daughters, Lillian "Libbie"
Key Lynch and husband, Bobby, of Walkertown and
Nancy Key Money and husband, Jimmy, of
Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren, David (Ann)
Key, Glenn (Paige) Key, Rob (Beverly) Lynch,
Carolyn Fournier, Steve Lynch, Darlene (Shae)
Ashley, Chris Money, Greg Money and Jeff (Alaina)
Money; and 14 great- grandchildren. The service
will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at
Beck's Baptist Church, followed by a graveside
service at 3 p.m. at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford.
Dr. Karl R. Minor and the Rev. Ray Hamilton will
officiate. The family will receive friends from 7
to 9 p.m. today, April 23, at Vogler and Sons
Reynolda Road Chapel. Memorials may be made to
Beck's Baptist Church, 5505 Becks Church Road,
Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Vogler and Sons Reynolda
Road Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

KING - Esther Key Pruitt, 88, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at Central
Continuing Care in Mount Airy. She was born Dec. 23, 1917, in Surry County
to Gabriel Jackson and Emma Jones Key. Esther was a lifelong member of First
Baptist Church in King where she was active in the choir and the women's
missionary group as long as her health permitted. She was a charter member
of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 328 in King and was instrumental in
organizing the Rainbow Girls. Esther was a hairdresser and operated Esther's
Beauty Shop in King for many years. She was a caring and giving person who
was loved by all. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Dennis Pruitt, in 1960; two sisters, Bessie Smith and Doris Denny;
and five brothers, Fred, Howard, Gilbert, Alton and Clyde Key. Surviving are
a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Robert "Woody" Martin, of Pilot Mountain;
a stepson and daughter-in-law, Dr. Kenneth and Angela Pruitt, of Birmingham,
Ala.; two granddaughters, Cynthia A. (John) McPherson and Tamara M.
(Frankie) Morris; four stepgrandchildren, Keith, Ellise, Torri and Corrine;
14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cloyce Davis of Mount Airy and Rachel
(Douglas) Livengood of Winston-Salem; a very special sister-in-law, Phoebe
Key, of King; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be
conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at King Memorial Park, with Dr. John
Wren officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening,
Sept. 24, at Slate Funeral Home in King.

KING - Pheobe Moorefield Key died Monday, March 26, 2007. She was born June 2, 1927, in Stokes County to Walter Reid and Mattie Palmer Moorefield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Edsel Key, and two sisters, Viola M. Calloway and Irene M. Newsome. Surviving are a niece, Nancy Whitaker; three nephews, James Calloway and his wife, Elaine, Richard Newsome and his wife, Bonita, and Eddie Newsome; and a number of nieces and nephews by marriage. She was a member of Boyles Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, where funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 29. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, at Slate Funeral Home in King. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Boyles Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, Cemetery Fund, c/o Watson Mabe, 1656 Flat Shoals Road, King, NC 27021. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Samuel Newsome and to the staff at Universal Health Care in King.

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Cloyce Key Davis of 1015 Mitchell Street, Mt. Airy, NC, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Maxwell Jackson "Max" Davis. She was born June 2, 1921 in Surry County, NC to the late Gabriel Jackson Key and Emma Jones Key. Cloyce and her husband Max owned and operated Max Davis Shoe Store for almost 30 years. She was a devoted lifetime member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Susan (Davis) Belew and husband, Hank, Clayton, GA, Janet (Davis) Hickey and husband, Tom, Lynchburg, VA, Cathy Davis, Creedmoor, NC. She is also survived by two sons, Joe Davis and wife, Betsy (Hiatt), Mt. Airy, NC, and Charles Davis and wife, Rita (Climer), Blowing Rock, NC; other survivors include four grandchildren, Joey Davis and Danielle Edwards of Pilot Mountain, NC, James and Dawn Davis, Claudville, VA, Teresa and Carlos Leiva, Centreville, VA, and Russell Davis and Donielle Tilley, of Mt. Airy, NC, two great grandchildren, Alex Leiva, and Emma Davis. One sister and brother-in-law, Rachel (Key) Livengood and husband, Doug, Winston-Salem, NC. The family would like to recognize their Mother' s extraordinary talent for cooking, fried chicken, biscuits, gravy and perfect pound cakes. She provided all with love for 88 years. Visitation with the family will be held on Monday, September 14, 2009 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. The funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September, 15, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Airy. Dr. Roger Gilbert will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Remembrances may be made in flowers or to First Baptist Church, 714 North Main Street, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.

Key, Hester Ann (b. 22 FEB 1910, d. 1 MAR 1978)
Note: Hester had a ruptured appendix when she was 13 years old, this somewhat slowed her growth.

She died of meningitis.

Hester and Gilmer are buried at the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Cumberland, VA.

Her husband Gilmer was a Army Air Corps veteran of WW II. He resided in Cumberland, VA since 1922 where he was a lifelong farmer. He served on the Agriculture Stabilization Committee for more than forty years and operated Bryant's Gulf Station for ten years prior to his retirement.

ARARAT, N.C. - Mr. W. Irvin Key, 88, of Home Place Park Road died Sunday,
Nov. 24, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Key was a native of Ararat,
N.C., where he was born Sept. 14, 1914, to the late A.D. and Mary Jones Key.
He was a member and deacon of Union Primitive Baptist Church and was the
chairman of the board of Home Place Recreational Park. Mr. Key was a loving
husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his
beloved wife of 67 years, Mrs. Leola Atkins Key, of the home; four
daughters, Gaye Nell Flinchum and husband, Rex, Glennice Lynch and husband,
Don, and Velma White, all of Ararat, N.C., and Kathe Murray and husband,
Fred, of Raleigh; three sons, Elwin Key, Jerry Key and wife, Martha, and
Rudy Key, all of Ararat, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and
a sister, Mrs. Clara Belle Brown, of Westminister, Md. Mr. Key was preceded
in death by a son, L. Wayne Key, five sisters, Hattie Steele, Essie Denny,
Inez Petry, Hester Bryant and Nell Clifton, and two brothers, Emory and
Byron Key. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 P.M. Tuesday, Nov. 26,
2002, at Union Primitive Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church
cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Monday at
Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain. Memorials may be made in floral
tribute to the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or a charity of
the donor's choice.
