Notes:

Samuel's name first appears in the town records of Springfield, MA in Dec.of 1639 when he was a juryman. According to Savage, Samuel "brought wife and children, some of which were born in England, but in what town he had first lived is unknown." He was a deacon of the first church of Springfield, and "he used to exort the people and conduct the meetings on the sabbaths when there was no minister".
The family moved to Northampton, MA in about 1655 and were among the first settlers of that town. By 1659, Northampton was a frontier outpost of about 200 inhabitants with two horse paths going from it - one to Springfield and one to Hadley. Samuel died "while sleeping in his chair."
