I REMEMBER…
the first boy and girl party I attended. I believe it was at Judy Hedley’s house.
dancing to “Rock Around the Clock” for the first time.
my first kiss. Well, I may not actually remember the first kiss, but I certainly remember the boy.
getting moved for talking - in home room (Mr. Oellermann), Miss Niles’ class, and ??
when I was a freshman thinking the senior class was really special. I remember getting a ride to school with David Lee and was elated. Of course, he was just being thoughtful.
almost wrecking another senior’s car. I don’t think he asked me out after that.
attending the Pacific Regional Basketball Tournament the year we won and the bus trip to the State tournament. (I think this was my Junior year.)
eating my first pizza - it was at Melrose Pizzeria
having fun (and working hard) collecting papers for the Sophomore paper drive and being a “paper maid”.
several math classes with Mr. Thoss. Math was one of my favorite subjects.
the proms and the parties afterwards that lasted all night - at the homes of friends, of course. Good clean fun!
reading Prom magazine each month.
working after school for Fred A. Gossom, Attorney at Law. Joan Schubert and I were chosen by Miss Summers at the request of Mr. Gossom to work there our senior year.
my daddy passing away when I was a freshman.
some of the great friends I had during high school from my class: Sandy Hague, Jerry Major, Doris Groh, Pat Smith, Betty Waller, Dolores Akins, Carol Ridley, Peggy Tucker, L. J. Banks, Douglas Dungan (I wrote to him when he was in the Marines after graduation), Jim Radtke, Red and Bob Staples, Bill Thiemann (my favorite jitterbug partner), Ronnie Walker, and Bill Wallace. There were great friends from other grades too.
I could go on and on because school and the social life connected with it was always enjoyable for me. But I will close with this thought: In the movie Gigi, Maurice Chevalier sings a song with Hermione Gingold - “Ah, Yes, I Remember It Well.” However, he didn’t really remember anything correctly. So if I’ve remembered anything incorrectly, let me know. On the other hand, after 45-50 years, does it really matter?
Thanks for the memories!
Barb Hill, class of ‘59
