The Title Tag

Having a title coded on your site is absolutely essential.

  • Your site is indexed automatically in the Freepages directory, about 24 hours after uploading, according to what you have placed between the title tags for your homepage --
as long as you named it index.htm or html.

See "How to get Listed" at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/howlist.html
    • Also note that the title is indexed by the first letter EXACTLY as it is written in your coding, so think carefully what you want to put there.  (Articles like a and the are ignored).  You want it to be put under the letter that most people would look for "your" family page.  For instance -
      • Zuber Homestead is indexed under the Z's
      • Cheri's Page would be indexed under the C's
      • My Home Page would be indexed under the M's
      • Home Page would be indexed under the H's
      • The Home Page of Cheri Zuber would be indexed under the H's (ignores The)
      • NOTE:  If you don't update the title tags, some WYSIWYG editors put a title in of "New Page" which would be indexed under the N's - not what you want!

So be careful to make your title tag descriptive of how you want your page indexed.

  • The title tag is also what usually shows with the link on search engines when someone does a search and your page is on the list (along with the description meta tag on some search engines, while others use the first words on your page).

  • The title tag is also what is shown in the bar at the top of the browser when someone opens a page.  Logically the title tag should match the visible title you put on your page, but it's not a rule, and in fact on FreePages you may definitely not want to. Your FreePages directory listing (the title tag) should say exactly what your page is about, and be written so it will be indexed where you want, so make it clear and direct --- but it's just fine to use cute or crazy names or title banners on the page itself for others to see.

So what is the HTML coding for the title tag?

<TITLE>Your Title Goes Here</TITLE>

The title tag goes in the header section of your website - somewhere between the Head and /Head tags.  Usually Meta Tags follow after the Title element in the header.

FrontPage users:  You can set the title tag either in HTML view or by going into File > Properties and changing it on the General tab.
