 MY GENEALOGY

Since GEDCOMs are not acceptable on Freepages, you have a couple other options for getting your entire family tree out on the internet. (These are in order of recommendation, with the first being favored.)

  1. Upload your GEDCOM to WorldConnect and put other information - photos and extra additional family details - on your FreePages website with a link to your family tree on WorldConnect
    • Advantages
      • Quick and easy to update - any time you want to update your information you just create a new GEDCOM and upload it to replace the old one - two steps and you're done uploading updated information on every individual
      • You can control what displays to a certain extent - there are many different options at WorldConnect that you can set when you upload to customize what is there
        • Living individuals' details are automatically blocked for privacy reasons.  If there is no death date, the default cutoff is 1930 - anyone with a birthdate after 1930 is considered possibly living.  However, you can change the default cut-off date (some people prefer 1900).  The reason 1930 is chosen is that individuals born after 1930 would be younger than 75 years old - so are most apt to be living since average lifespan is around 75.
        • You can choose to show Living Individuals (showing as Living Jones with no details) or to block them entirely so they don't even show there was a person in the family.
        • You can choose whether to show notes and/or sources.
        • You can choose whether others can download a partial GEDCOM and how many generations they can download if you allow them to do so.
      • You can put a link on your FreePages site - Click here for information on putting a link to your WorldConnect database on your website
      • It can serve as a backup - if your computer ever crashes, and you've kept your complete GEDCOM at WorldConnect fairly up-to-date, you can download it back to your computer to use again quickly.
    • Disadvantages
      • The only problem with using WorldConnect is that, other than the settings you set up on your upload page, you have no control of what shows for each individual unless you control it in your GEDCOM
    • If you are thinking of uploading your GEDCOM to Worldconnect, click here. Information on uploading/submitting your tree is in the right column.  Make note of your userID and password so that you can update your GEDCOM in the future.
  1. Use a program that produces a website from your genealogy data - some genealogy programs create websites themselves or you can use some other program (many free) which are designed to convert your GEDCOM to HTML pages (see Google's directory of GEDCOM to HTML programs)  The most popular three appear to be GED2HTML, GED2WWW, and GedPage.
    • Advantages
      • It creates most of your pages for you in minutes
      • You have complete control of what appears - you can edit the information on any of the individual's pages before uploading
    • Disadvantages
      • These programs often do not name their first page index.htm, so you'll still have to create an entry page for the first level called index.htm which directs them to the entry page of your tree - or change the name of their entry page and have to change the "home" link on every other page
      • You have to find some way to block information on living individuals or other information you don't want to have out on the internet, since many GEDCOM exports will include everything
      • If you are going to edit some of the generated pages, you'll have to do it again each time you re-create your website from your GEDCOM or genealogy program
  1. Start from scratch and develop all pages yourself - whether by HTML or WYSIWYG editor
    • Advantages
      • You have complete control of what appears - you are creating each page from scratch
    • Disadvantages
      • It takes a LOT of time to create all those pages if you have a large family tree
      • Maintaining/updating the details on every person's page to keep up with what you've researched can be very time-consuming (time you could spend doing more research!)
