Uploading through RootsWeb FreePages File Manager

Uploading is simple using RootsWeb File Manager once you have designed your page(s) on your computer.  The only real issue is that it can get very time-consuming if you have a lot of pages.  If your site is very large, you may want to find an FTP program or use the directions to FTP with your browser.  To upload through File Manager:

  1. Go to RootsWeb File Manager at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi and log in with your ID and password (remember to type EXACTLY as it was given to you - it's case sensitive!).

  2. At the top of the page, choose the community/directory you want to publish to from the drop-down menu.  Turn ON (checkmark) each of the boxes (html, gif, jpg, other) and then click the "Enter File Manager" button.

  3. Go to the bottom of the page where it says " File Upload Utility".

  4. Whatever folder you have open is where your files will be uploaded.  If you want to put some things (like images) into a sub-folder, you can create a subfolder here - just above the File Upload Utility is a section to "Create a Subdirectory".  Once you've created the subdirectory, it will show above on the page.  Click on the link to open that subdirectory and then upload what you need into that directory.

  5. By clicking the "Browse" button beside each box in the "File Upload Utility" section, you can look around your computer and find the file you want to upload.  There are, by default, four windows, so you can upload 4 files at once.  You could actually change the "Send this many files at once" number 4 to a higher number, but the more files you try to upload at a time, the more likely it will lock up and fail.  We'd suggest keeping it lower than 8 unless you have a VERY fast connection.

  6. Before clicking on the "Send Files" button, decide whether you want to have the "Convert filenames to lowercase" turned on.  If you have it turned on, it will change all file names to lower letters.  Then, if you have a link built to a name which has capital letters, your link won't work.  So most of the time it's best to turn it off so your filenames won't be changed and perhaps break the links.

  7. When you're finished uploading everything, just log off the File Manager and go check out your new site!
