 MY GENEALOGY

Publishing your website with FrontPage 2000

1.    Open your web in FrontPage

2.  If you didn't correctly set your settings before developing your site, check your settings before attempting to upload/publish.  Click here for instructions..

File - Open Web

3.    Choose "File" and "Publish Web"

File - Publish Web

4.  In the window that pops up, type
 ftp://users.freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/xxxxx
(where xxxx is the community you're publishing to (genealogy_html, history_html, misc_html, etc)  The sample at right is publishing to the history_html community.

NOTE:  Once you've uploaded a web once, FrontPage remembers where you published to so that it is already there when you go back to upload again.

If this is your first time to upload, click on the "Options" button which will expand the window.  We recommend that you set the options as shown here:

  • Publish changed pages only

Click OK.  Once you've set these up on each web, they will become the default and you shouldn't have to set them again.

Then click the Publish Button.

5.  In the window that pops up, type your RootsWeb UserID in the Name field and your RootsWeb password in the password field.  These were supplied to you in your "Welcome" e-mail.

(NOTE:  It is case sensitive, so be sure that you are typing it EXACTLY as it was sent to you.  We suggest you copy and paste from the e-mail if possible.)

Then click OK.

Name and Password

Your website should immediately begin uploading.  When it is finished, you will see a message that your web has finished uploading.

NOTE:  After the first time, when you publish, the system will compare what is on FreePages with what is on your computer and upload changed pages.  If there is a file on RootsWeb that you have since deleted on your computer, you may get a message asking if the copy on FreePages should be deleted.  In order to keep FreePages equal to the web on your computer, you will want to answer "yes".

If your website doesn't upload correctly the first time, there are several things you should check:

  • Did you type the ftp address correctly?
  • Did you type the community/directory name correctly?  Go to File Manager at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi and sign in to see a listing of the communities in the drop-down menu.  The actual directory name for the communities is the name listed plus _html after it (i.e. genealogy_html, history_html, etc.)
  • Did you type your UserID and password correctly?  Remember it's case sensitive, so must be exactly what you were sent in the "welcome" e-mail.
  • Did you use any FrontPage extensions on your website?  RootsWeb does not support them.
  • Did you include any files on your web that are not allowed on RootsWeb Freepages?  If so, the server will sometimes not allow you to upload.  The original agreement at http://accounts.rootsweb.com/index.cgi?op=show&page=freagree.htm lists some of the items, also the  Acceptable Use Policy.  Basically it is any file that is storage or cannot display the banners - examples include Adobe PDF files, MP3, zip files, video files, CGI scripts, GEDCOMs, huge images files, databases, etc.
  • Do your web pages have spaces in them?  This often causes a problem with uploads.  It's best to not have spaces in the names - use a dash - or underscore _ if you want to split words.  For instance -  zuber-cheri_page.htm

Still having problems?  Don't be afraid to ask for help.
