 MY GENEALOGY

Publishing your website with FrontPage 2003

  1. Open your web in FrontPage

  2. If you didn't correctly set your settings before developing your site, check your settings before attempting to upload/publish.  Click here for instructions..
  1. Choose "File" and "Publish Site"

  2. There are several things to do on the window that pops up.

Choose the "Remote Web Site" tab.

Turn on the button beside "FTP" and then enter the correct information in the following fields:

"Remote Web Site Location" - put in ftp location - ftp://users.freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
"FTP Directory"  genealogy_html (or whichever one you're publishing to - history_html, misc_html, etc.)

Then click on the "Publishing" tab at the top and make the following changes:

"Changed Pages Only" - usually turned on unless you're trying to re-upload your entire site for some reason.
"Changes" - Could use either one, but I use "Determine changes by comparing source and destination"
"Logging" - If you turn on "Log changes during publish" you would have a log entry to review if you have problems uploading.

  1. When you click "OK", you will get a window to input your ID and password.  Be sure to type them EXACTLY as they were given to you - including capitalization.

  2. You will see your website (on your computer) in the left window.  The RootsWeb file you're publishing to is shown in the right window.

Depending on what you're trying to do:
  •  There are three buttons/arrows listed between the windows.  If you are wanting to move just a file or two, you can find it on your web, highlight it, then click the arrow to copy just that file:
"Local to Remote" - used most often because it loads everything from your computer up to the RootsWeb site
"Remote to Local" -  If you ever lost your site on your computer, you could use this to download the site back from RootsWeb to your own computer
"Synchronize" - compares the two sites and moves the data back and forth until they match.
  • These three option arrows are also located in the lower right corner - these apply to the entire website.  If you wanted to just publish the entire site, choose one of those in the corner and click on "Publish web site"
  1. If you use the "Publish web site" button, when complete you will get a message that your file is finished uploading.

NOTE:  In the future when you publish, this process will compare what is already on the Rootsweb site versus what is on your computer.  If there are files on RootsWeb that you've deleted from the web on your computer, a message box may pop up asking you if you want to delete them.

If your website doesn't upload correctly the first time, there are several things you should check:

  • Did you type the ftp address correctly?
  • Did you type the community/directory name correctly?  Go to File Manager at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi and sign in to see a listing of the communities in the drop-down menu.  The actual directory name for the communities is the name listed plus _html after it (i.e. genealogy_html, history_html, etc.)
  • Did you type your UserID and password correctly?  Remember it's case sensitive, so must be exactly what you were sent in the "welcome" e-mail.
  • Did you use any FrontPage extensions on your website?  RootsWeb does not support them.
  • Did you include any files on your web that are not allowed on RootsWeb Freepages?  If so, the server will sometimes not allow you to upload.  The original agreement at http://accounts.rootsweb.com/index.cgi?op=show&page=freagree.htm lists some of the items, also the  Acceptable Use Policy.  Basically it is any file that is storage or cannot display the banners - examples include Adobe PDF files, MP3, zip files, video files, CGI scripts, GEDCOMs, huge images files, databases, etc.
  • Do your web pages have spaces in them?  This often causes a problem with uploads.  It's best to not have spaces in the names - use a dash - or underscore _ if you want to split words.  For instance -  zuber-cheri_page.htm

Still having problems?  Don't be afraid to ask for help.
